GAME MANAGEMENT REPORTS

HOME TEAM REPORT NEXT HOME GAME
  19 November
Hertfordshire Hurricanes NFL hashes, no numbers on field, lines very faint and painted blue.
Crew not paid - club said that they had already paid BAFRA, but Herts do not appear on pre-paid list.
Crew had to wait until app 12:15 for access to changing rooms.
18/02/07
Royal Holloway Vikings The field at Royal Holloway is 80 yards long between the goal lines. The goal posts, which sit directly behind the backlines were not padded and padding could not be obtained. In view of this the field was shortened to allow for the goalposts to be well beyond the playing area.
The goal lines were set at the 10 yard lines with the original goal lines becoming the back lines. This reduced the field to 60 yards between the goalines but ensured player safety.
There was no front limit line for the team areas. The game balls were flat and needed to be inflated. Royal Holloway had no roster for the officials and so had to write a list of names and numbers before the game could start. This did not cause a delay as we were already waiting for the goal post padding to arrive. Once it was known that the padding could not be brought the game kicked off as described above 30 minutes after the scheduled kick off time..

Stirling Clansmen Graeme Taylor, Stirling Clansmen Secretary called at 8:15am 19/11/06 to advise game cancelled due to water logged field 09/12/06
Oxford Cavaliers NFL-style hashmarks, used cones to sight the ball at NCAA dimensions. No 9 yard marks, numbers in the wrong place and wrong size. No team areas, only a coaching line between the 25's. No limit lines. No pylons. Owing to prior knowledge of the changing facilities at Harcourt Hill, came ready-changed. 04/02/07
Sheffield Sabres The pitch was only 60 yards long with 11yard endzones. The coach's boxes were the full length of the pitch. The goal posts were rugby posts over 10 ft from the ground.
Markings on the pitch were faint due to a junior rugby league game played before and the markings were yellow.
03/12/06
Leicester Lightning By prior arrangement the game at Leicester was switched to Loughborough as the home team had no pitch. 03/12/06
Surrey Stingers Only two balls supplied and markings very faint 04/02/07
UEA Pirates Only one ball provided and so we had to use away team's ball. Although the pitch markings are burned into the field there was very little paint on them making it hard in some areas to see if in or out of bounds. 26/11/06

NEW MEMBERS

Please join me in welcoming the following new members to BAFRA:
Norval Scott and Robert Fitsimmonds

JOKE FROM LAST WEEK

The Directors understand that a few members were upset by the sexist nature of the spoof rulebook amendment included in last week's Newsflash. We would like to take this opportunity to retract this and to apologise whole-heartedly to all those who found this offensive in any way, and to assure the membership that no items of a sexist nature will be included in any future Newsflash.

It was only ever intended to amuse, not to offend, nor to be taken seriously.

JOHN SLAVIN TROPHY

I have added some information and a couple of pictures about the John Slavin Trophy to the website. Access may be gained by from the front page under the "For Teams" section down the left-hand side.

What I really need for this is a good picture of John - can anyone send me one?

BAFRA QUESTIONNAIRE

I have recently been through all the completed questionnaires that were returned, and can honestly say that there were some eye-catching suggestions. I have done a complete analysis of the answers which will be discussed at the next Directors' meeting. I have also prepared a synopsis of my results for the forthcoming Flagdown.

TRAINING DAY FOR NEW RECRUITS AND NEWER OFFICIALS

I can now confirm the Training Day will be held at The Coventry Hill Hotel, Rye Hill, Birmingham Road, Allesley, Coventry CV5 9PH, on Saturday 27th January 2007. This is the same venue we held the 2006 BAFRA Convention.
Hotel Website - Location Map

The training is being organised mainly for new recruits and officials who have taken up the stripes within the last 2 years. However, an open invitation is extended to all members. This will be our first event for a number of years tailored solely toward newer officials and I’m sure everyone who attends will gain from the experience.

The programme will include some presentations, a practical session, video review and plenty of discussions on Rules and Mechanics.

So what happens next? Well all you have to do is register your intentions to attend by sending me an email at training@bafra.org and be there on the day for a starting time of around 9:30 - 10:00am. We should finish around 4:00pm at the latest. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Please give me a call if you want to discuss the days programme further.

NEW MECHANICS MANUAL

We are planning to produce a new version of the mechanics manual for next spring. This will be the first new one for about 3 years. If anyone has any suggestions for mechanics changes (or, god forbid, found a mistake in the previous edition!), please let me know.

TRAINING IN GENERAL

The recent questionnaire, issued with the membership renewal form, highlighted that additional training is well up on everyone’s agenda. This year we had 2 main training events, the Convention in March and the Elite Training day in September. All being well we intend to run at least 3 or 4 more during 2007. If numbers continue to grow at current rates we may also be able to consider holding regional training days again.

So keep your eye on the calendar in Newsflash and if you can, please come along to as many events as possible. Your support would be greatly appreciated and you will always be made welcome.

ROGER'S RHETORIC

From last week Play: A's ball, 4th and 3, on A's 40. Team A lines up in a scrimmage kick formation. A83 is the snapper and touches the ball or simulates touching the ball. There are six linemen to the left of A83 and one lineman, A37, to the far right of A83. No Team A linemen are numbered 50-79. A37 shifts to the backfield prior to the snap leaving A83 on the end of the line. A83 catches QB A18's legal forward pass on B's 44 while grounded.

Ruling: A's ball, 4th and 8, on A's 35. The clock starts on the ready for play. Illegal formation and illegal touching fouls and also possibly an ineligible receiver downfield foul. A83 remains an ineligible receiver since he originally was an exception to the mandatory numbering requirement for a scrimmage kick formation. The play would be legal, even though A83 is the snapper, if A37 initially lined up in the backfield leaving A83 on the end of the line. The play would also be legal if Team A had at least five linemen numbered 50-79.
New this week Team A scores a touchdown as time expires in the fourth quarter. The score is A6-B0. Team B does not leave the field of play and lines up for the try. Team A's locker room is at the opposite end of the field. QB A16 takes the snap and all eleven Team A players run a convoy into and out of A's end zone and into Team A's locker room.

Ruling?
