EMAIL RECEIVED

Ralph Leniore from the AFBN refereed the BAFL Premier clash between the London Olympians and the Bristol Aztecs at the BAWA last weekend. Can I take this opportunity to say how pleasant it was to have Ralph as our white hat. He is one of the most informed, agreeable and well mannered referee's myself and the Aztecs have come across.

Regards

Charlie Wilson
Bristol Aztecs Captain

PLAUDITS

Plaudits to Staffs and Doncaster

The crew would like to offer plaudits to Staffordshire Surge and Doncaster Mustangs who played in what turned out to be hot conditions yet maintained intensity with excellent attitudes and very few penalties.

NOTTINGHAM FLAG COMPETITION

Nottingham Caesars will be hosting a flag tournament on Saturday June 9th and would appreciate any help from BAFRA members they can get. This is strictly a do it for fun day, no fees will be paid. Last year I was on pitch 7 so I'd doubt we can have too many volunteers.

Anyone interested let me know and I'll send you directions and a start time

JIM'S JOTTINGS

Last week I discussed when a kick was not a kick in the context of "trapping" the ball. I had three useful responses – thanks particularly to the person who quoted Newton's First Law of Motion: I had no idea Russell was that famous!

Tony Newsham also make a posting on the refStripes forum (http://www.refstripes.com) that has produced a lot of heated debate about semantics, but a general opinion that trapping the ball is not a foul.

My proposed interpretation was:

  • If the player intentionally moves his knee, lower leg or foot towards the ball, he is kicking it. If the player keeps his knee, lower leg or foot still, or moves his knee, lower leg or foot away from the ball to absorb the impact, then it is not a kick.

A good point made was that sometimes in trapping the ball (soccer style), the foot has to be raised to make contact and that this might be interpreted as striking the ball. Therefore a simpler interpretation would be:

  • If the player intentionally contacts the ball with knee, lower leg or foot with the objective of propelling the ball in any direction, he is kicking it. It if touches his knee, lower leg or foot as part of an act of obtaining possession of the ball, then it is not a kick.

Further, to clarify another point:

  • A player who is trapping the ball with his knee, lower leg or foot is not to be considered in control of the ball, and therefore cannot be in possession of it.

Further comments welcome.

GAME MANAGEMENT REPORTS

HOME TEAM REPORT NEXT HOME GAME
  20 May
Southern Sundevils No 9yd marks. No team areas, coaching boxes or limit lines. Field marked in blue. Down box is not properly attached to its pole - needs rectifying properly.

Norwich Devils 90yd pitch . No Game balls presented until we had to chase them again just prior to kick off. Crew waited 40 minutes to be paid , finally paid by a member of the team so we didn't have to wait anymore. No Changing room available had to wait for teams to move out to get changed. Change to chain crew at half time.

Cornish Sharks Goal posts had been moved to give a full 100 yard pitch but unfortunately this meant that the fixing for the goalpost was left protruding above the surface of the pitch on about the 3 yard line. Shortened the pitch to 80 yards to compensate for this and played the game. Both teams deserve credit for playing the game in a very sporting manner and Home team management deserve special merit for the way in which they looked after and made the crew feel very welcome. Despite the long journey after the treatment we received I would recommend the trip to any other official.

London Warriors Goals were soccer goals with extended uprights. Warriors played in black shirts, Blitz in dark blue: the difference was obvious close-up. Changing room locked on arrival, waited about 25 minutes for it to be opened. No coat hooks, would have been an extremely tight squeeze for a 5-man crew. We were told it could be locked and left our bags there, and then told just before the coin toss that they could not lock it: the kickoff was delayed by five minutes while we retrieved our bags. Chain crew was changed at half-time.

Plymouth Admirals No numbers on field of play. Team area and coaching area marked but too close to sideline. Officials changing room wet and dirty.
Despite this both teams deserve credit for playing a good hard game of football in a very sporting manner. Also plaudits to Home team management for the manner in which they made the officials feel welcome.

Reading Renegades Reading has a 100 yard pitch which was perfectly marked. On the negative side, it is about 150 yards away from the locker room. Game Management was not available until right before kick-off including the game balls. Chain crew was not the best to be found and two members had to be replaced during the game.

East Kilbride Pirates Yard line markings were 9 foot from sideline not 9 yards. No team area or coaching box. There were no inbound lines (hash marks). The home team provided 3 balls but these were old, worn, and not fit for purpose. Fortunately the away team were able to provide suitable game balls. Payment was also not made until we were leaving the changing area (45 minutes after the conclusion of the game).
