ISSUE 32/07 20 August 2007

TINTED VISORS

On Sunday we officiated at Maidstone and discovered a player wearing a tinted visor, and asked him to remove it as this is not allowed this year. We were surprised to hear that on three previous occasions an official had said that it was OK as it was transparent.

This is not the case - Rule 1-4-5q defines Illegal Equipment and states "Eye shields that are not clear or made from moulded or rigid material." - this means that only visors that are clear are permitted and any non-clear (i.e. tinted) visors even if they are transparent are illegal.

ROGER'S RHETORIC

From last week Play: A's ball, 2nd and 8, on B's 28. QB A16's legal forward pass is complete to A88 in B's end zone. A88 commits an offensive pass interference foul in B's end zone.

Ruling: A's ball, 2nd and 23, on B's 43. Team B will accept the penalty. The penalty for offensive pass interference is 15 yards from the previous spot but no loss of down.
Prior to 1982, Team B had the option of accepting a touchback.
Prior to 1993, the penalty also carried a loss of down.
New this week A's ball, 3rd and 4, on A's 46. Team A is lined up with two tight ends in a balanced line. Before the snap, noseguard B94 enters the neutral zone but does not make contact with any offensive player. Left tackle A76 immediately reacts to B94's movement and lifts a hand from the ground. The ball is snapped and QB A17 goes to one knee on A's 44.
