DIRECTOR OF RECRUITMENT

The BAFRA Board of Directors is pleased to report that Ben Griffiths from Manchester has been appointed as Director of Recruitment with immediate effect. Ben will be working on following-up membership enquiries and also managing specific campaigns and initiatives.

I'm sure you all join me in wishing Ben all the best in his new role.

NEW HONORARY MEMBER

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce that we have made Charlie Dean-Young an honorary member of BAFRA in recognition of his long and distinguished service.

Charlie has been a member for 23 years and in that time he has served BAFRA in all the major areas of its work. In training, he has been a training officer (first of all in the North West and latterly in the Midlands) for 16 years. In scheduling, he was Director of Operations for two and a half years - the toughest job in BAFRA. Currently, he is in his fourth year as Director of Finance, in which capacity he has overseen the revamping of our finance procedures in accordance with the needs of the new company structure.

Well deserved congratulations to Charlie.

If anybody going to the Elite training day in September fancies a curry in Southall afterwards then please e-mail Graham Coleman.

DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS

Phil Clarke has accepted the role of Deputy Director of Operations. Phil will become familiar with all the activities of the role and be able to cover for me during any absences.

Updated assignments have been placed on the website. Anyone affected this week has been independently advised. Assignments for the 24th August - including the initial playoff rounds - will be uploaded no later than the evening of Monday 18th. Please ensure that you consult the website for your assignments for the 24th.

I am still waiting on a few people to complete their availability for September. The selection committee sits on the 30th August to consider this year's bowl crews. To be considered I will need your up to date availability by the 29th.

BAFRA LANDMARK

In 2009 BAFRA will celebrate its 25th anniversary. A lot has changed over the years within football in the UK and we are one of the very few organisations who have managed to survive. There have been a few low points along the way but we are still going strong.

The BAFRA Board have been considering ways in which to celebrate this milestone, however we would like to know the thoughts of our members.

The date for next year's convention has already been set for Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April 2009. We could arrange a meal for the Saturday evening and invite along some guests. We could also get some anniversary polo shirts and game day shirt badges made up. There have been many suggestions but we want to know what you would like. If you have any thoughts or ideas on this subject please give me a call or drop me an email.

NEXT HOME GAME

10/08/08

Bolton Bulldogs

All the Bulldogs' equipment was locked in a store to which the Council had recently changed the locks. Team had no access to the store. No 5 yard lines on the field, no goalposts and the match balls were of very poor quality. The stakes were telescopic rods which extended to 5' and had no clear markings – it was difficult to see them. The chain crew did their best in spite of the horrendous weather conditions, but they were – apart from the down box person – very slow and unsure about their role.

Tim Vickers #129

Chester Romans

Game suspended for 20 minutes in the second quarter due to serious injury. Congratulations to the Romans personnel for the way in which they handled the incident, especially their medical officer who lead the incident calmly and with a great duty of care. Both teams' players should also be congratulated for the sportsmanlike behaviour they showed throughout the incident.

Henry Richardson #358

Unknown

Manchester Titans

Field marked partly metric and partly imperial, with hashes at either 1 metre or 1 yard apart. Game was run using chains which were 10 yards long (certified using BJs 10 yard long piece of string). End Zones were varying length depending on the side of the field you were standing. Team areas ran from 10 - 10 yard line on home sideline and 30 - 30 yard line on visiting sideline. Kick off delayed for 15 minutes to allow home team to retrieve rosters for card check.

Mike Cavanagh #465

16/08/08 vs Edinburgh Wolves

Farnham Fast Lane Knights

No coaching area or team area markings. Both teams were in white jerseys.

Peter Parsons #321

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball, try, on B's 3. A3's kick is blocked. The ball is picked up by B72 who carries the ball into A's end zone. B63 clips (personal foul) on B's 48 during during B72's run.

Ruling?

Last week's play

Play: A's ball, 3nd and 8, on B's 30. QB A17's legal forward pass is muffed by B38 near the sideline. A88 voluntarily goes out of bounds to get around B38. A88 jumps, grasps the ball while airborne, lands in the field of play and advances for a touchdown.

Ruling: A's ball, try, on B's 3. Touchdown. The rules do not specify when the Team B player must touch the pass in order for A88 to regain eligibility. The touching of the ball by B38 need not occur after A88 went out of bounds.
