EFAF PANEL 2009

We've received details from EFAF of the quota of places for each country on their officiating panel. Due to two British teams (Coventry and Farnham) entering the EFAF Cup next year, our quota has risen from

5 to 7. This leaves at least 2 vacancies. While we don't have to fill them, it seems appropriate to give people the maximum chance to get involved at this level.

To be eligible, you must meet the following EFAF criteria:

I think all members of the BAFRA Elite Panel with 5 years' experience would meet these criteria. The one condition would be that you would have to attend the EFAF clinic in Warsaw on 24-25th January (there is some financial support available for this).

Contact Pete at selection@bafra.org if you wish to apply, or me if you have any questions. The deadline for applications has been extended to Sunday 16th November.

UWE HOME GROUND

The following message has been received from the UWE Bullets president:

UWE home fixtures will be played at Filton Wise on the all weather pitch. We will be marking the pitch with a soluble paint solution so that you will have hard lines this year and not taped lines. As a result of a train track at the back of the pitch we can only safely kick at one end. There will be posts made available to do this.”

DIRECTOR AWAY

I will be away on business on Thursday 13th November and Friday 14th November and will have no access to emails. In my absence Phil Clarke will be able to deal with any urgent issues that may arise.

Please continue to send any email to operations@bafra.org as Phil will receive a copy.

NEXT HOME GAME

02/11/08

Royal Holloway Bears

Field was 94 yards long. End zones were 8 yards deep and the groundsman had marked midfield at the 47 yard line. No numbers or nine-yard marks on field. Numbers were very small and off the field. Team areas too small. Changing rooms were not secure or separate. The door through to them was locked before full time. Game was abandoned with 8:05 remaining in 3rd quarter due to injury to Royal Holloway player (paramedics very indecisive about what to do). Royal Holloway claim that they "did not realise" they were the home team for this game so brought no cheque books or cash to pay officials.

Dan Bridgland #506

16/11/08 v Southampton Stags

BNU Buccaneers

Game suspended for 10 minutes for an injured player. Team only had £40 for the admin fee.

Pete Thom #200

23/11/08 v Bristol Barracuda

Bristol Barracuda

The field was 106 yards. Two sets of lines had been marked on the field, one set had 2x10yd end zones and 2x43-yard halves, another had 2x8yd end zones and 2x45-yard halves. No 9yd marks. Coaching box lines only 4ft outside sideline, and team area lines only 10ft from sideline. Team areas marked between the 17yd lines. Very muddy conditions, home team did not provide any towels for the balls. All credit to both teams for playing through some appalling conditions.

Jim Briggs #31

30/11/08 v Birmingham Lions

Lancaster Bombers

Played on 80yd astroturf with faint blue markings. Field goals were poles attached to fence outside pitch. No coaches area, limit lines, hash marks at sidelines or pylons. Both teams had blue jerseys but sufficient differences between these coupled with different coloured helmets meant that the coaches agreed to play – there were no problems. Excellent attitude of both teams' players and coaches in difficult weather conditions.

Keith Alldritt #323

16/11/08 v Sheffield Hallam Warriors

ARU Phantoms

Game suspended with 6:30 left in the 4th quarter due to ARU player injury. Ambulance had to leave to take the player to hospital. By the time it would be likely to return, it would be dark. After consultation with the teams, it was agreed to call the game.

Steve Tonkinson #99

07/12/08 v Kent Falcons

UWE Bullets

The field was 80 yards long and there were no 5 or 10 yard lines. There was tape stuck at every 5 yard line to the 9 yard mark. There were no hash marks but cones were placed behind the back line to allow the ball to be spotted. The goal post consisted of pipes fixed to the wire fence at the changing room end and nothing at the opposite end as a railway track runs behind the field.

Keith Wickham #423

16/11/08 v Warwick Wolves

  Outstanding items from previous weeks

Plymouth Blitz

Crew were not paid, team need to submit the invoice to the university.

Keith Wickham #423

30/11/08 v UWE Bullets

Stirling Clansmen

Crew were not paid. Stirling said the league told them that they did not have to pay the officials.

Les Connor #152

16/11/08 v Newcastle Raiders

Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. In addition, the large number of game cancellations this week means that the fixtures listed here are highly likely to change. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball on B's 3, try. A17 is holding the ball for a place kick with his knee on the ground. B73 bats the ball from A17's hands. B81 recovers and advances across A's goal line.

Ruling?

Last week's play

Play: A's ball on A's 30, free kick. A7's free kick bounces on B's 2 and breaks the plane of B's goal line. A87 recovers the ball in B's end zone before the ball touches the ground in B's end zone.

Ruling: A free kick does not become dead until the ball, untouched by Team B, touches the ground in B's end zone. A87 may legally touch the free kick after the kick has gone 10 yards or touched a Team B player. A87 recovered a live ball in B's end zone. Result of the play is a touchdown. A's ball on B's 3, try.
