PRE-PAY BUAFL TEAMS

The following teams still owe BAFRA money: Hull, Reading, Plymouth and Leicester.

Reading were added to the list this week as they forgot to pay the crew after the match.

Prepayment teams are Teeside, Loughborough, Greenwich, Surrey, Kent, Bristol, UWE, Birmingham, ARU, Royal Holloway and Hertfordshire.

Warrick, Staffordshire and Paisley have made arrangements to pay BAFRA by invoice before the game, they should be treated as prepaid. For all prepaid teams please send in a request for payment by Thursday lunchtime, but only once your crew has been confirmed.

Hull have finally contacted me and expect to pay this week. All the other debt – with the exception of Reading – is outstanding from the weekend when many games were called off late due to bad weather, we have charged the teams according to rule.

DERRICK INCE

Members will be sorry to hear of the passing of Derrick Ince, who died on 15th January. Derrick was a member of a crew of officials who were together for 2 and a half years and later known as 'The Dream Team'. Derrick was the Umpire with myself as Referee and two Americans - Larry Mastin (HL) and Leroy Chatman (LJ) - making up the 4 man crew. Derrick has been missed over the last few years, his death has come as quite a shock to his Chiltern Area colleagues and the Dream Team members in particular.

AVAILABILITY

Could I offer a gentle reminder to those of you who have not yet updated your availability forms to do so as soon as possible. I am about to start scheduling for the 24th Feb and beyond and there are a significant number of you – including 8 elite officials – who currently have no availability listed for that period.

NEXT HOME GAME

Greenwich Mariners

Game balls were very worn. Chain crew provided very late, kickoff delayed so HL could brief them. Chain crew and 1 ballboy disappeared at Halftime. Replacement chain crew were poor, 2nd half kickoff delayed so HL could brief them. On the other hand, the replacement ballboy was excellent and also did the clip to try and help out the chain crew.

Kent Falcons

Inbounds lines quite irregular (never equal distance apart laterally). Kent use cheerleaders for chain crew and they are often quite slow or move despite being asked to stay put! Well done to both teams for a hard fought contest.

17/02/08

Bristol Baracudas

The crew had to change in a small room with bags of balls and bottles stacked inside, making it even smaller. No toilets in the changing room. Chain crew weren't provided until right before kickoff. Chain crew late for second half.
Mike LeFevre #341

10/02/08

Tarranau Aberystwyth

Changing room not available on arrival as it was full of Cheerleaders and no separate changing facilities after the game - home team, away team and officials were all sharing the same changing area. No pylons or cones to mark the goal and endlines, Cardiff supplied them for us. One game ball was inadequate and was going down during the game, Cardiff supplied a spare. Several of the assistants had to be changed during the game, plaudits to Heidi - one of the Tarranau cheerleaders - who stepped in as ball person at very short notice. Game suspended for 7 minutes to deal with an injury to a player. Officials were not paid, and neither was the admin fee. The game itself was played in good spirits so plaudits to both teams.

Bath Killer Bees

80 yard field. Access to officials changing room was via the players changing area. Game suspended for 9 minutes to deal with an injury. Both teams played in excellent spirit and there was only one major penalty in the entire game, plaudits to both teams.

Newcastle Raiders

The front and rear stakes were made from mops. They were not tall enough and were sometimes difficult to spot on the sideline.

Portsmouth Destroyers (though technically a Royal Holloway Vikings home game)

Game held at Portsmouth Roko Centre as agreed by league. Pitch had not been marked since before the Xmas break; cans of spray paint were used in order to mark (very wobbly) the sidelines, goal lines, end lines, hash marks at 5 yard intervals at the sidelines and inbounds. There were no 5 yard or 10 yard lines, no 9 yard marks or numbers present. No team areas or coaching boxes marked. Both goals were inadequate in terms of width and height, and were completely different at each end.

Phil Clarke #372

10/02/08

Sheffield Hallam Warriors

No five yard lines; inbound short yard marks soon disappeared during the first half; confusing rugby markings near the 10 yard lines.
The game was played with great spirit by both sides and there was no major penalty all game.

Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. In addition, the large number of game cancellations this week means that the fixtures listed here are highly likely to change. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

PICTURE OF THE WEEK:

Graham Coleman was feeling a little left out after the plethora of recent baby photos in newsflash, so he sent in one of himself and his very own daughter. Aren't they cute?

New this week

Play: A's ball, 2nd and 12, on A's 30. B67 holds eligible A81 on A's 44. The pass is deflected behind the neutral zone. The pass is catchable by A81 (or would have been if not for the hold by B67).

Ruling?

Last week's play

Play: A's ball, 4th and goal, on B's 4. The score is A28-B28. A3's field goal attempt is blocked and does not cross the neutral zone. The ball is rolling on B's 5 when B96 kicks (implies intentionally) the ball. B47 picks up the ball in B's end zone and advances across A's goal line. Time expires in the fourth quarter before B47 recovers the ball.

Ruling: Safety. Two points awarded to Team A. Game over. The final score is A30-B28. The ball became dead when it touched the ground in B's end zone since the status of the ball is still a kick and no player of Team B touched the ball after the kick crossed the neutral zone. The impetus for the ball being in B's end zone is the illegal kicking by B96. Team A will decline the penalty for the illegal kicking foul by B96. The result would be the same if B96 batted the ball backward although it would not be a foul.
