CONVENTION UPDATE
2008 BAFRA Examination
1. The exam will be issued at the Annual Convention over the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th April 2008. Members who attend will have 5 full weeks from the date of the Convention to submit their answer sheet. The closing date will be Saturday 10th May 2008.
2. Those members who do not attend the Convention will be sent the Exam by post within 7 days of the Convention. It must be returned by Saturday 10th May 2008.
3. A maximum of 1-week extension may be granted, but only in exceptional circumstances and at the discretion of the Director of Training. Requests for an extension must be made by Saturday 26th April 2008 to training@bafra.org.
4. Members who complete the exam by Saturday 10th May 2008 will be given priority on all Bowl and Play-off games.
5. Members who do not complete the exam within the defined timescales will not be scheduled to any games whatsoever. Note: This may sound harsh, however, BAFRA’s Board of Directors are duty bound to make all efforts to ensure BAFRA is not put at risk; having unqualified officials on the field could raise questions over insurance cover and possible liability claims.
6. There is no option to receive the exam by email. This may appear strange in this technological age; however events over the last few years have highlighted the need for BAFRA to protect its intellectual property.
7. ALL exam returns must be made by hard copy through the post.
Remember, to register for the convention you need to contact our Director of Finance, Charles Dean-young. Charlie can be contacted by email at finance@bafra.org.
For those who missed last week's Newsflash, you can find full details of the Convention and accommodation rates here.

ELECTION OF DIRECTORS AND RESOLUTIONS FOR THE AGM
On Friday last I sent out nomination forms for the election of Directors and forms for the submission of resolutions to the AGM, which is being held on the Saturday of the Annual Convention and Training Weekend in April. These were sent out only to qualified members and they went to the e-mail addresses held in the BAFRA data base. I am aware that some people are experiencing difficulties in receiving e-mails from the BAFRA web address. If you are a qualified member and you did not receive this communication, please notify me as a matter of urgency and I will forward a copy to you. Please note that associate and affiliate members were not sent this communication.
The closing date for the nomination of members to stand as Directors and the receipt of resolutions for the AGM is 5:00pm on Saturday 8th March 2008. As this is a new process for this year (a consequence of BAFRA becoming a Company Limited by Guarantee), if anyone has any queries regarding either nominations or the submission of resolutions then they should not hesitate to contact me.

Sheffield Sabres |
Field Markings were inadequate, light Yellow Lines were used which disappeared from sideline to sideline. 5 yard line was marked in the first 10 yards only. No team Areas were marked. One Upright of the chains was bent and only 5’ in height. The changing Rooms were too small for a four Man Crew, if there had been more than 4 then crew would have had to change in rotation. Chain crew and 1 ball person changed at half time, however this did not result in a delay of game as the crew were notified at the start of the game. The Game was played with an excellent attitude by both teams; it was a credit to football! Chris Jarvis #10 |

|
Warwick Wolves |
Game kicked off 45 minutes late due to lack of ambulance. Warwick had a qualified first aider present and once a stretcher and a first aid kit with inflatable limb splints were found the game went ahead. Brian Yates #29 |

|
UWE Bullets |
The chain crew was not provided until just before kickoff and had no previous experience of doing the chains. Game was delayed 7 minutes in order for the Head Linesman to instruct the crew. Flag thrown on UWE for Delay of Game. However, the three young ladies who were on the chain crew did a remarkable job for their first time. The game itself was a well played match played in a brilliant spirit as both teams were playing for a shot at a playoff place. Plaudits to both the UWE Bullets and the Cardiff Cobras. Mike LeFevre #341 |

Napier Mavericks |
Napier's balls were of poor quality, we used balls from Glasgow. The game was held up at start for 1hour 20 mins awaiting the arrival of Glasgow. Les Connor #152 |
Unknown |
|
Lincoln Colonials |
The game had to be suspended for half an hour while medical personnel attended to injured player. The field markings were poor. Plaudits to both teams for participating in a well-behaved game. Cam Gibson #286 |

|
Sheffield Hallam Warriors |
No
five yard lines; inbound short yard marks soon disappeared during
the first half; confusing rugby markings near the 10 yard
lines. |
24/02/08 |
|
Kent Falcons |
Inbounds lines
quite irregular (never equal distance apart laterally). Kent use
cheerleaders for chain crew and they are often quite slow or move
despite being asked to stay put! Well done to both teams for a
hard fought contest. |

Greenwich Mariners |
Greenwich play at Crystal Palace Sports Centre. The changing room was the disabled toilet which had insufficient seating, no shower, no separate toilet and insufficient room for a pre-game conference. Game balls were worn and needed pumping up. Ball persons were provided very close to kickoff. The ball boy on the Greenwich sideline was their player who had been disqualified last week, I had to ask him to go to the stands after he verbally abused Kent players (he was not on the roster or in kit). Ball person on Kent sideline changed at half time. Goals were soccer goals with extended uprights and a net (wrapped around the crossbar) on one of them. Daniel Bridgland #506 |

|
Derby Braves |
The pitch was 90 yards long with yellow markings that were difficult to see in the bright sunshine. Muz Gibson #268 |

Bristol Barracudas |
This was an evening game played under floodlights on the 3G Astro Turf pitch at WISE Campus, the field was 80 yards long. There were no permanent lines on the field at all, white tape (less than 4 inches wide) was used to mark the goal lines, end lines and side lines. Small markings on the tape were at each 5/10 yard line. The 3 yard lines had markings in the centre of the field to denote where PAT would go from. There were no, 5 yard lines, 10 yard lines, 9 yard marks (or field numbers), hashmarks at side lines, inbounds hashmarks or goal posts.
The number markers placed along each sideline were made of hard plastic, so were moved back to at least 7 feet out of bounds on both sides. Another 4 of these markers were used to jury rig where the inbounds hashmarks would be to allow for spotting of the ball at the correct distance from the sidelines and again these were moved as far away from the endline as possible.
The chain set was made of interconnecting rods, and came apart quite often during the game. We were only supplied with two balls after the agreed kick off time, and 1 ball person. The chain crew were supplied quite late, they were fairly slow and sometimes would not wait for signals before moving the chains - this nearly caused a few problems with penalties due to the very limited amount of markings that we had.
The changing room was not adequate in size for a normal crew (was designed for 3 people in terms of seating and space).
Despite all of the problems the game itself was very enjoyable, was watched by a fairly sizeable crowd and was played in good spirit by both teams. Phil Clarke #372 |

|
Cardiff Cobras |
The balls provided were very worn. There was no private shower or toilet in the changing rooms. We were only provided with chain crew and one ballboy very close to kickoff. Bath supplied the other ballboy. Alan Dobson #308 |
