CONVENTION COUNTDOWN
Programme of Events
The Programme of Events for the Convention is almost complete and will probably be issued along with Newsflash in a week or so. I’m currently waiting on final confirmation from a couple of speakers.
In the last few years we have held the Convention on the same weekend as the College Bowl, this restricted the amount of time we had on the Sunday. This year the Bowl game takes place a couple of weeks earlier. As such I have arranged 8 Break-out sessions and additional speakers.
Guest Speaker: David Pegg
I am delighted to confirm that the Chairman of Sports Officials UK (SOUK), David Pegg will be coming along to the Convention. David will be giving a talk on the Saturday titled “What the Hell am I Doing”
As a Badminton Umpire David has officiated World, European and National events. Among his many achievements he was selected 5 times to officiate in a final at the All-England Championships. He was also asked to write the first book produced by SOUK "An Introduction to Sports Officiating"
2008 BAFA Rule Book
Good news on the rule book front. Last year they were not available until after the Convention. This year there will be no such delay. They are already printed and will be picked up next week. They will be issued along with the Exam at the Convention.
Registration
The following members have booked their places at the Convention (note that if you are not listed it may be because you have only very recently confirmed your place, a fresh list will be issued next week):
J Flanagan, P Sutton, W Marriage, R Grace, P Thom, D Bridgland, K Alldritt, C Dean-Young, S Tonkinson, G Coleman, T Lindeman, D Parsons, L Connor, H Richardson, C Rodgers, B Griffiths, S Silver, A Newsham, C Oates, P Clarke, A Briggs, G McJannett, C Urin, A Price, A Binns, M Wilson and J Eldridge.
If your name is not on the list please contact Charles Dean-young at finance@bafra.org. Even if you are not staying at the hotel you still need to register. Cheques to pay for hotel rooms should be made payable to BAFRA and sent to 89 Smithfield Road, Uttoxeter, ST14 7LD. Payment should be made by the 13th of March.
Full details of the Convention and accommodation rates can be found here.

INCIDENT REPORT
You will note in the disciplinary cases this week that an official was thrown to the ground by a player. I have been in touch with all the officials involved and am currently liaising with the league (BUAFL) regarding this case. My thanks to all those who have provided statements.
The team is appealing against the disqualification. More news will follow when it is available.

BAFA ON 'BINGOLOTTO'
The new BingoLotto TV show airs for the first time on Friday (29th Feb) and American football will be featured.
Antonio Fargas, who played Huggy Bear in the seventies hit show 'Starsky and Hutch', is flying to Great Britain from his home in Las Vegas to represent BAFA on the BingoLotto launch show.
Antonio, whose son Justin Fargas plays for Oakland Raiders in the NFL, has a huge love for American Football and always tries to get to a game or two whenever he is in Great Britain. Eighteen months ago, Antonio was spotted in the crowd at BritBowl XXI and has been a great friend of American Football in this country ever since.
When Antonio appears on the show, he will have an opportunity to win as much as £100,000 for BAFA. Tune in to the show live on Virgin 1 and Challenge TV at 7:00pm Friday, 29th February.
BingoLotto Lottery Gamecards can be purchased from retailers where you see BingoLotto signs, including participating PayPoint outlets. A percentage of the proceeds goes to 110 sports and recreation bodies who have signed up to the BingoLotto scheme – all of which are members of the Central Council for Physical Recreation (CCPR).

Leicester Longhorns |
The game was delayed for 30 minutes waiting for the ambulance before the game. After double over-time the game was finally won by Leicester 20-14. After both teams had scored on their 1st possession in OT and failed the PATs, Leicester prevailed on their 2nd possession after Derby failed on theirs. Cam Gibson #286 |

Cardiff Cobras |
The ball boys never returned for the second half, the game proceeded without them. Mike LeFevre #341 |

|
Sheffield Sabres |
The pitch had no 9 yard marks and no yardage markers of any kind. No team areas were marked. The changing room was the same as last week, however the game management found another room for us. The chain set was the same as last week, see comments below. Chris Jarvis #10 |

|
Greenwich Mariners |
As Greenwich play at Crystal Palace the officials have to change in a disabled toilet (three of us went changed into our kit). Goals were soccer goals with extended uprights (one upright on one goal was bent) and a net wrapped around one cross bar. During the first half the chain crew and ball boy on that side of the field were so poor that we changed them at half-time. Dan Bridgland #506 |

Warwick Wolves |
Game kicked off 45 minutes late due to lack of ambulance. Warwick had a qualified first aider present and once a stretcher and a first aid kit with inflatable limb splints were found the game went ahead. Brian Yates #29 |

|
UWE Bullets |
The chain crew was not provided until just before kickoff and had no previous experience of doing the chains. Game was delayed 7 minutes in order for the Head Linesman to instruct the crew. Flag thrown on UWE for Delay of Game. However, the three young ladies who were on the chain crew did a remarkable job for their first time. The game itself was a well played match played in a brilliant spirit as both teams were playing for a shot at a playoff place. Plaudits to both the UWE Bullets and the Cardiff Cobras. Mike LeFevre #341 |

Napier Mavericks |
Napier's balls were of poor quality, we used balls from Glasgow. The game was held up at start for 1hour 20 mins awaiting the arrival of Glasgow. Les Connor #152 |
Unknown |
|
Lincoln Colonials |
The game had to be suspended for half an hour while medical personnel attended to injured player. The field markings were poor. Plaudits to both teams for participating in a well-behaved game. Cam Gibson #286 |

Sheffield Sabres |
Field Markings were inadequate, light Yellow Lines were used which disappeared from sideline to sideline. 5 yard line was marked in the first 10 yards only. No team Areas were marked. One Upright of the chains was bent and only 5’ in height. The changing Rooms were too small for a four Man Crew, if there had been more than 4 then crew would have had to change in rotation. Chain crew and 1 ball person changed at half time, however this did not result in a delay of game as the crew were notified at the start of the game. The Game was played with an excellent attitude by both teams; it was a credit to football! Chris Jarvis #10 |
