CONVENTION COUNTDOWN
Star in Stripes!
As we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary this year I have been trying to secure a high profile guest speaker for our Convention. It gives me great pleasure to confirm that arrangements to bring over Greg Gautreaux from the USA have now been concluded. For those of you who stayed up until the small hours of the morning on SuperBowl Sunday to watch the Steelers take on the Cardinals, you will have already caught sight of Greg. He was the Field Judge on the game.
Greg has been a sports official for 34 years. He has officiated football, basketball and baseball in high school and college for a number of years. For the last seven years he has been a Field Judge in the NFL. He has also served as a high school assigner in baseball for 23 years and in basketball for two years. Next season he will serve as the assigner for the high school football association in his area. During my discussions with Greg it became apparent that he is a firm believer that training is a very important aspect in the growth and development of our Association and he is looking forward to making his contribution.
Registration
To register for the convention you need to contact our Director of Finance, Charles Dean-Young at finance@bafra.org. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel you still need to register. Once you have requested a room, you will receive an acknowledgement and a request for payment. Payment needs to be made by 20th March 2009. Please make the cheque payable to BAFRA Ltd and send it to BAFRA, Director of Finance, 89 Smithfield Road, Uttoxeter, ST14 7LD. Please note rooms booked after 21st March may cost more.
Full details of the Convention and accommodation rates can be found here.
Our numbers up
Attendance at the Convention has increased considerably over the last few years. In 2006 we had 35 people come along, in 2007 we had 48 and in 2008 we had 60. This year we expect the number will go up again. As such, I ask you to Charlie’s job easier by registering as soon as possible.

ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments have been updated on the website. I have contacted most people individually but I would urge you to check anyway.
March assignments are still up in the air while I await confirmation from the league regarding games scheduled for the early part of the month. March assignments will likely be issued on a week by week basis.
Pete Johnson
OFFICIALS WITH SIMILAR NAMES
As the number of officials in BAFRA grows, inevitably we are getting more people with identical surnames. Please ensure that the correct membership number is used on paperwork along, where possible, with the member’s forename rather than just the initial. Lack of clarity may lead to the wrong officials being paid, or having the wrong persons game marks passed to the Selection Committee. Your assistance is much appreciated.

Due to away team transport breaking down en-route both Head Coaches agreed to delay kick-off by 30 minutes. Plaudits to Cougars, for providing an excellent venue. Warm changing rooms, warm showers & well marked floodlit pitch. Ben Griffiths #228 |

Game was played at UWE Bullets' home ground at Filton WISE. Field only 80 yards long. No hashmarks at either inbounds lines or sidelines. Some 5 yard lines crooked. Only one goal available (unsafe to kick onto railway line at other end) so teams agreed to play without any goals. 01/03/09 v Bristol Barracuda |
|
UEA Pirates |
No Ambulance till a player called and arranged for one to attend for which he had to pay £350 on his own personal card. Ambulance arrived 70 minutes late. 4th quarter was a 15 minute running clock due to running out of light. Both teams and coaches are to be commended for the way they handled the situation. Larry Rigby #269 |

Essex Blades |
Only 1 set of posts. 85 yd field. No 5 yd lines, no team area / coaches area markings. This was an alternate field as Essex's regular field was affected by the recent bad weather. Derby Braves |
Although the pitch was well marked the Endzones were only 5 yards, so we moved the goal line to the 5 yard line. The game its self was played in excellent spirit by both teams. Muz Gibson #268 |
22/02/09 v Nottingham Outlaws |
|
Kent Falcons |
Field extremely muddy. The ambulance failed to turn up again! This is the second time Kent have been let down by their medical cover. They had paid for a different St Johns provider this time, but apparently they were not answering their phones. Kent acknowledge that they are likely to be passed over in the future if there are other games that would otherwise be left uncovered due to a shortage of officials, since this is twice in the same season that they have forfeited a home game due to inadequate medical cover. Dan Bridgland #506 |
22/02/09 v ARU Phantoms |
|
Warwick Wolves |
Chain crew left with 2 mins left in the half. A new chain crew were found. A third chain crew had to be found for the 2nd half. Barry Beynon #533 |
22/02/09 v Bath Killer Bees |
|
Napier Mavericks |
The head coach advised that he had not been informed that BAFRA would schedule officials to the game, so did not have any money to pay us. Ian Sneddon #427 |
22/02/09 v UWS Pyros |
|
Sunderland Spartans |
No team areas, no coaching area, yard lines every 10 yards, no numbers or 9 yard marks, no goalposts, grass long, surface uneven, boggy between hashmarks, only 1 Ball Boy. Ambulance had only one stretcher and it was needed to transport to hospital. In the 3rd period with 7:47 remaining the game was suspended while the ambulance crew attended a player, 40 minutes later the teams abandoned the game due to expected lack of light. Tzvi Lindeman #381 |
22/02/09 v Northumbria Mustangs |
|
Leicester Longhorns |
Field markings faint, NFL hashmarks, only one person for the chain crew, away team had to supply two people for the chain crew. Chain crew did a good job. Martin Cockerill #345 |
22/02/09 v Staffordshire Stallions |

PLAY OF THE WEEK:
|
|
|
New this week |
Play:
A's ball on A's 48, 4th
and 15. A12 punts, the ball lands on the B10 and is rolling
towards team B's endzone. A84 has pursued the ball downfield and
is lying with his legs in team B's end zone when he reaches out
and stops the ball's motion on the 1 yard line (no batting). The
ball then rolls forwards to the B's 3 yard line where A25
recovers. Ruling?
|
|
Last week's play |
Play:
A's ball on A's 35, 4th and 10. The snap sails over punter A8's
head. The ball is rolling at A's 16 when A8 kicks the ball
forward. A64 recovers the ball on A's 38 and advances to B's 42
where he is downed. |
