The Convention programme is taking shape and should be completed within the next couple of weeks. We have included a total of 8 different break-out sessions, covering a variety of topics, which everyone will be able to attend. There will also be plenty of game film to review and a presentation on rule changes. In addition I hope to have a representative from BAFCA come along to give a talk. I'm also still in the hunt for a good picture for the Caption Competition, any offers?

THE STING

I have received the following message from Adrian Dalmedo of the Bath Killer Bees:

“Introducing 'The Sting'!

On Sunday March 1st the Bath Killer Bees host the Bristol Barracuda for the Bees' final regular season home fixture. There is a lot riding on the game, with Bath needing a win to secure qualification for the post-season knock-out plate competition.

As well as the game itself there will be a lot going on; both for veterans of the game and complete novices. A free programme is being distributed and I will be conducting a commentary on a PA to explain the proceedings in Layman's Terms. There is also going to be a fundraising raffle and a BBQ & bar to keep everyone happy.

At half time the University's cheerleading squad, the Bath Jets, will be performing a routine, there will be a number of American Football themed games for spectators to try their hand on.

Hopefully the event will massively improve the profile of the team, both on campus and also in the local area. Long term our aim is to have an event that will rival the finesse of Explosion at the University of Birmingham. Already we have the University's radio station, TV, photographic society and newspaper on board to cover the event, but we would like to expand the coverage to a regional basis.”

ASSIGNMENTS + AVAILABILITY

Assignments for this week are on the website.

We are now nearing the end of the BUAFL season, could members please update their availability for the BAFL season as soon as possible. We need to cover 17 games a week for the first 3 months of the season and I am hoping that enough of you are available to help us achieve this. We have managed to do that on a number of occasions during this BUAFL season so I am confident that we can during the BAFL season.

PLAUDITS

Plaudits to Surrey Stingers and Essex Blades for a highly spirited and entertaining game at the Varsity Centre, Guildford on Sunday 21st February, which was only decided when Surrey's runner was tackled short of the Essex end zone as time expired. The whole crew (Bridgland, de Val, Eldridge, O'Connor, Fitzsimmonds, Scott and Allen) enjoyed themselves immensely, home management made sure that the day went very smoothly, so thanks to them.

GAME MANAGEMENT REPORTS

REPORT

NEXT HOME GAME

22/02/09

Liverpool Fury

No goals and due to unmoveable hockey nets (chained to fence) the endzone was amended using original 5yd line as goal line. Side and 5/10yd markings newly put down and were very faint. No team/coach areas, hash marks or hash marks on the sidelines.

Keith Alldritt #323

Unknown

Southampton Stags

Goals tied to fence two yards beyond end zone. Two wires across field. Match commentators scored 10/10 for clichés.

Jim Briggs #31

Unknown

Sunderland Spartans

Crew not paid - invoice submitted to Sunderland who say they will organise payment through their Student Union and will send cheque directly to BAFRA. Field very uneven, although correctly marked. No goal posts at either end, chains rather primitive with home-made down box. No team areas marked on either side.

Mike Cavanagh #465

01/03/09 vs Glasgow Tigers

Napier Mavericks

Payment was discussed with the head coach before the game and officials were advised that payment was being made by cheque. After the game the team made no contact with with the officials, who were eventually told that the person with the cheque book was not at the venue, so we could not be paid.

  Outstanding items from previous weeks

Greenwich Mariners

No numbers or 9-yard marks, no limit lines. Field was very bumpy and had a significant incline from one end to the other. Some 5-yard segments more or less than 5 yards. Some lines very uneven. Hashmarks not always 1yd apart. Kick off delayed 15 minutes waiting for the medical cover to arrive.

Alan Dobson #308

Unknown

UT Cougars

Due to away team transport breaking down en-route both Head Coaches agreed to delay kick-off by 30 minutes. Plaudits to Cougars, for providing an excellent venue. Warm changing rooms, warm showers & well marked floodlit pitch.

Ben Griffiths #228

Unknown

Bath Killer Bees

Game was played at UWE Bullets' home ground at Filton WISE. Field only 80 yards long. No hashmarks at either inbounds lines or sidelines. Some 5 yard lines crooked.

Only one goal available (unsafe to kick onto railway line at other end) so teams agreed to play without any goals. Team areas and coaching boxes marked on one side of field only, and between 20 yard lines. No numbers on field.

Jim Briggs #31

01/03/09 v Bristol Barracuda

UEA Pirates

No Ambulance till a player called and arranged for one to attend for which he had to pay £350 on his own personal card. Ambulance arrived 70 minutes late. 4th quarter was a 15 minute running clock due to running out of light. Both teams and coaches are to be commended for the way they handled the situation.

Larry Rigby #269

Unknown

Essex Blades

Only 1 set of posts. 85 yd field. No 5 yd lines, no team area / coaches area markings. This was an alternate field as Essex's regular field was affected by the recent bad weather. Credit to Essex for arranging an alternative field which allowed the game to go ahead. Game played in excellent spirit by both teams.

Steve Tonkinson #99

Unknown

Lincoln Colonials

The pitch was only 80 yards long and the inbound has marks were NFL type, some goal line pylons were missing. Game played in good spirit by both teams.

Muz Gibson #268

08/03/09 v Derby Braves

Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball, 4th and 17, on B's 42. A83 catches a legal forward pass on B's 20 and advances to B's 5 where he is hit and fumbles. A83's fumble rolls forward into and across the sideline in B's end zone. B88 commits a roughing the passer foul.
Ruling?

Last week's play

Play: A's ball on A's 48, 4th and 15. A12 punts, the ball lands on the B10 and is rolling towards team B's endzone. A84 has pursued the ball downfield and is lying with his legs in team B's end zone when he reaches out and stops the ball's motion on the 1 yard line (no batting). The ball then rolls forwards to the B's 3 yard line where A25 recovers. Ruling?
Ruling: Team B's ball, 1st and 10 on the B's 3 yard line. The ball was recovered by team A on the 3 yard line and team B will take the ball there since the spot of A84's illegal touch is less advantageous. A84's illegal touch on the 1 yard line does not cause a touchback despite the player lying in partially in the end zone. The location of the ball is important in this situation, not the player touching the ball. This is a crucial difference between NCAA rules and NFL rules.

Correction: Regarding the play that was posed in issue 04/09 and answered last week, the clock should start on the snap rather than the ready signal.
