Operations update

Our scheduling problems have been compounded recently by a failure of Pete Johnson's home computer. He can currently only access email via his work machine. Phil Clarke is continuing to issue the schedules until Pete can get his technical problems sorted out. Once again, your forbearance with the delays in issuing the schedules is appreciated, as are the offers to help out that have come in.

Tri-Nations Tournament

The dates and fixtures for the BAFA Tri-Nations tournament in July are as follows:

Sat 18th July - Australia v Tamworth/Loughborough combined (warm-up game)

Tue 21st July - Australia v GB

Thu 23rd July - Australia v Sweden

Sat 25th July - GB v Sweden

All the games are being played in Loughborough with a 6pm kickoff.

BAFRA is planning to put out crews from the Elite Programme for the three tournament games, but it may be that for the midweek games we need to supplement the crew with officials who are not on the Elite Panel. Could all Elite Panel officials and anyone else who would be interested in working the tournament (or the warm-up game) please let Pete/Phil know their availability via operations@bafra.org.

Membership Update

Congratulations to Tim Fisher, Christian Olsson and Lee Mills on completing the Induction Training Programme. Thanks to Larry Rigby, Les Connor and Brian Yates for helping with their training.

Game report forms and travel expense claims

Occasionally, an official legitimately claims more than the expected mileage to a game – for example, because they make a detour to pick someone else up. If this is the case, please could the referee make a note of this on the Game Report form. This saves me having to contact the officials to ascertain the reason.

Davie Parsons and Jim Briggs are off to the Junior World Championships in Canton, Ohio, next week. Their first game is the opening night (27th June) clash between Team USA and Team France. You can follow the tournament online at http://www.usafootball.com/jwc.

PLAUDITS

East Kent Mavericks v London Warriors (Youth)

Plaudits to both teams on a good game played in an excellent spirit.

Tim Ockendon #481

Tamworth Phoenix v Norwich Devils (Youth)

The league game was postponed, but both teams agreed to have a controlled
scrimmage so that Norwich would not have a completely wasted journey. Plaudits to both teams for fighting hard in the sun and to Norwich for coming away victorious despite all the odds.

Murray Gibson #268

BAFA Situations Vacant

Due to recent resignations and changes to people’s commitments, BAFA wishes to fill a number of vacant posts.

The posts on offer include:

At least one deputy for each of the above is also desired. Full details of the posts and how to apply can be found at http://www.bafa.org.uk/artman2/publish/bafa/Situations_Vacant_at_BAFA.shtml.

BAFA will continue to accept applications until each post is filled. However, applications received by Friday 3rd July 2009 will be given preferential consideration.

BAFRA would like to encourage people from all sectors of the sport to apply for these jobs. Only by having the widest possible pool of candidates to choose from will the best appointments be made.

New this week

Bristol Aztecs

Game suspended for 30 minutes to treat an injured player.

Keith Wickham #423

28/06/2009 vs Coventry Jets

East Kent Mavericks

(Youth & Senior)

Youth kickoff delayed by 15 minutes due to late arrival of the ambulance and repairs to a potentially hazardous area of the field.

Knock-on effect caused senior game to kick off 1 hour late. Milton Keynes had only 15 players remaining at halftime and forfeited the game.

NFL hashmarks for both games.

Tim Ockendon #481/Daniel Bridgland #506

Youth: Next season

Senior: 16/08/2009 vs Maidstone Pumas

Farnham Knights

Farnham Knights (both senior and youth) are now playing at Farnborough RFC. Field is 90 yards and reasonably well marked (but no numbers). Changing room fairly small but adequate.

Jim Briggs #31

The game was suspended for 8 minutes in the fourth quarter for treatment of an injured player.

Peter Parsons #321

Murray Gibson #268

02/09/2009 vs Birmingham Bulls

Norwich: 28/06/2009 vs Birmingham Bulls

Outstanding items from previous weeks

London Olympians

Game played at Warren Avenue Playing Fields in Bromley due to unavailability of Crystal Palace. The crew was not informed.  Kickoff delayed 15 minutes while we travelled to the alternate venue.
NFL hashmarks in yellow, very short uprights, lines only every 10 yards.  Team areas very small.  No lines outside the sidelines.  Yardage markers placed too close to sideline, had to be moved back.  No seperate changing room.
This game is not indicative of the Olympians' general or usual standard of game management.

Alan Dobson #308

21/06/09 vs Maidstone Pumas

MKC Pathfinders

No numbers, no 9-yard marks.
Chain set came apart on two occasions.

Brian Yates #29

21/06/09 vs Lincolnshire Bombers

Colchester Gladiators (Youth & Senior)

Youth game was postponed by home team management due to waterlogged field.  It was apparent that the field would not dry out sufficiently to allow the senior game to proceed safely, so we informed home management that the game would also have to be postponed.

Tim Ockendon #481/ Daniel Bridgland #506

28/06/09 vs Tamworth Phoenix (Youth)

28/06/09 vs London Olympians (Senior)

London Warriors & London Cobras

No numbers or 9-yard marks.  PAT mark on the 2-yard line. Both games suspended for about 15 minutes each to treat injured players.

Alan Dobson #308

Warriors: 12/07/09 vs Maidstone Pumas

Cobras: 28/06/09 vs. Ipswich Cardinals

Maidstone Pumas

Game suspended for 10 minutes in 1st quarter to treat an injured Maidstone player.

Daniel Bridgland #506

28/06/09 vs East Kent Mavericks

Manchester Titans

Medical facilities were a qualified first aider in a rapid response type vehicle.  No stretcher was available in this vehicle but one was found within the rugby club.  No ambulance or vehicle capable of carrying a stretcher bound patient was present, no doctor or paramedic was on site.   I refused to allow the game to start under Rule 1-5-1-d.  Manchester identified to me 2 of their squad who were qualified paramedics, one of whom (to his credit) did not then play and took the role of paramedic in order for the medical requirements to be met.  The game kicked off on time.
Manchester have this week relocated at very short notice to a new venue at Ashton-under-Lyne RUFC.  The changing facilities are inadequate, the crew having to wait for the home team to vacate.  I would recommend that future crews travel in kit.

Alun Price #377

12/07/09 vs Lancashire Wolverines
