BAFRA NEWSFLASH |

Issue: 23/09 |
24th June 2009 |

Pete Johnson has informed the Board that he wishes to step down as Director of Operations as soon as possible. As some of you know, Pete is having to spend increasing amounts of time on family things.
In order to ensure the best way forward, the Board invites any member who is interested in taking over the role to contact us (me or, in my absence, another director). We are aiming to make an appointment fairly quickly.
The Director of Operations manages the week-to-week operations of BAFRA, including scheduling, liaison with leagues over schedules, and is chairman of the Selection Committee. He/she also contributes to the strategic direction of the Association alongside the other directors. He/she does not necessarily have to actually do the scheduling (recent Dir Ops have; others in the past have delegated it to regional schedulers), but they must ensure that it is done and done efficiently.
In my view, Pete has done a great job over the past year or so, achieving very high levels of game coverage and member satisfaction. His perceptive contributions to the Board will be much missed. We all hope he will be back able to devote more time to BAFRA in the future.

Jim Briggs and Davie Parsons will be away from 25th June to 7th July. They may be reachable by email during that time, but if there is anything urgent to deal with, please ensure it's brought to the attention of another director.
Jim Briggs

Jim and Davie are of course away because they’re officiating in Canton, Ohio at the JWC. The tournament itself begins on the 27th of June and ends on the 5th with the Gold Medal game. Both the Gold Medal and Bronze Medal games will be streamed live on the internet at http://www.foxcollegesports.com/. The Bronze Medal game kicks off at 7pm EST on the 4th, and the Gold Medal game at 1pm EST on the 5th. EST is 5 hours behind BST. All the best to Jim and Davie – and remember, as someone once said, servo vexillum volatilis.

July sees a relatively mixed month as far as games go, with the following requirements:
|
Saturday 4th July |
2 games, requiring 2 crews; 1 in Scotland and 1 in the East Midlands |
|
Sunday 5th July |
1 game in Birmingham |
|
Sunday 12th July |
22 games, including Cornish Sharks at home (volunteers please for this fixture) |
|
Sunday 19th July |
7 games and 1 exhibition game |
|
Sunday 26th July |
2 games |
We then move into August, which will be the busiest month of the season with 22+ games most weeks of the month, and quite a few home games for Scottish teams. The playoffs will then start towards the last weekend.
We also have the Tri-Nations tournament, can all officials advise separately which games they are possibly available for – priority will be given to current members of the Elite Programme.
Sat 18th July - Australia v Tamworth/Loughborough combined team (warm-up) 18:00
Tue 21st July - Australia v GB 18:00 (possibly 14:00?)
Thu 23rd July - Australia v Sweden 18:00
Sat 25th July - GB v Sweden 18:00
Please can people keep their availability forms coming in to allow the various commitments that we have in July to be finalised as soon as possible, and to make a head start on August taking advantage of the quieter weeks to do so.

Edinburgh Wolves 16.00
Lincolnshire Bombers 25.33
Kent Exiles 20.00

May I take this opportunity to remind referees to enclose a Game Management form for each game with the rest of their game day paperwork please, and if anyone has a completed form from earlier in the season not yet submitted, would they return it at their earliest convenience. Thanks.

Gateshead Senators |
The chain crew were inattentive and kept moving when not instructed to. One ballboy had to be provided by the away team and the Home team couldn't provide a ball boy for the second half. Game halted in second half when the presence of an individual in Gateshead's coaching area and on the sideline was queried. There was some confusion as to whether he was on the roster as a coach. On consulting the roster it was ascertained that he was not on it in any capacity and therefore removed from the area. Thanks to the Gateshead HC for his cooperation and help in doing this. London Olympians |
Played at Warren Avenue in Bromley. 100-yard field, lines only every 10 yards. Groundsman was asked to widen NFL hashmarks. Hashmarks still NFL width but 5 yds long with 1 yd gap in middle of field. 1 ballboy changed twice. Changing room too small, changed in vacant team room, not locked. No team areas. Colchester Gladiators (Youth & Senior) |
Youth game was postponed by home team management due to waterlogged field. It was apparent that the field would not dry out sufficiently to allow the senior game to proceed safely, so we informed home management that the game would also have to be postponed. Medical facilities were a qualified first
aider in a rapid response type vehicle. No stretcher was
available in this vehicle but one was found within the rugby
club. No ambulance or vehicle capable of carrying a
stretcher bound patient was present, no doctor or paramedic was
on site. I refused to allow the game to start under Rule
1-5-1-d. Manchester identified to me 2 of their squad who
were qualified paramedics, one of whom (to his credit) did not
then play and took the role of paramedic in order for the medical
requirements to be met. The game kicked off on
time. Alun Price #377 |
