ASSIGNMENTS - SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST

Revised assignments are on the website. Anyone affected by a change has been notified. Thanks to everyone who has accepted assignments changes this week. With your help I have been able to resolve 3 potential 3 man crews. Thank you, you know who you are.

I have yet not been notified of any changes to the number of fixtures for the 23rd. As such I will be looking at the games to see if I can assign some larger crews and possibly some assessors for that weekend. Any updates based will be published on the website on Sunday evening.

BAFRA ELITE PROGRAMME TRAINING DAY

Places for this year's Elite Programme Training Day, which will be held on Saturday 12th September at the Coventry Hill Hotel (the same venue as the 2009 BAFRA Convention) are filling up fast. Thanks to all of you who have already responded to my request in last week's Newsflash.

Since capacity is limited, please could all programme members who have not yet done so e-mail epcoordinator@bafra.org to let me know whether or not they will be attending.

The meeting is open to any BAFRA Official who would like to take advantage of the training on the day. However spaces are limited so let me know if you want to come along.

Last year's Elite Training Day attracted our biggest attendance since the programme began and the feedback we received was excellent. This year will, I am sure, be even better.

Further details and an agenda will follow in subsequent editions of Newsflash. In the meantime get the date in your diary, and I’m sure all will benefit from attending.

PRESIDENT AWAY

I am away next week from Saturday 15th August to Sunday 23rd August. I'm privileged to have been asked to be Supervisor of Officials at the European Championship B tournament in Austria. Another feather in BAFRA's cap!

Immediately after I get back from Austria, I'm then away on holiday until Wednesday 9th September.

I expect to have only limited internet access in Austria, and none at all on holiday.

Please contact another director if you need anything in my absence. Steve Tonkinson will be covering anything presidential that comes up.

AVAILABILITY

You will be aware that the BAFL bowl games will take place on the 26th & 27th September at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster.

I urge everyone to ensure that their availability for the playoff period is up to date. The selection committee is meeting on Saturday 22nd August to select crews. Your availability needs to be correct by 17:00 on Friday 21st. If after that time you are showing unavailable, we will be unable to consider you for the prestige games.

INCIDENT REPORTS

It is an essential part of the administration of discipline that ALL incident reports be filed online. This ensures that everyone concerned (and Newsflash) is aware of the report in a timely manner.

Normally the referee submits the report on behalf of the crew; in cases where is not able to do so he should ensure that either another member of the crew submits the report instead. If this is not possible, phone or email one of the BAFRA directors and ask them to do it for you. Reports should normally be submitted no later than the day after the game.

Thanks for everyone's attention on this.

TRAVEL EXPENSES

All travel expenses over the value of £10.00 for the period up to 19th July have now been processed and cheques posted. Note that recent postal strikes may affect delivery. Anyone who hasn’t received their cheques by the end of this week should first contact the referee(s) for the game(s) to ensure paperwork was sent, and then either myself or Craig Urin at finance@bafra.org.

Payments for under £10 will be included in the next batch of Travel Expenses.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE

Congratulations to David Graves, Derek Burridge and Stuart Young on completing the Induction Training Programme. Thanks to Martin Gibson, Simon Ryan and Paul Sutton for helping with their training.

DISQUALIFICATION APPEAL

James Pyke was disqualified from a game involving Highland Wildcats on 2nd August. Highland appealed against the disqualification and submitted a video of the play in question. On reviewing the video, the ejecting official decided that the disqualification was not warranted. The appeal is therefore upheld and the player can continue playing.

This is the first time that the procedure under the new BAFA Disciplinary Code (introduced last year) has been used. It's article 2-12 of the BDC if you want to check it out.

COACHES CARDS

My scanner packed in a while back so I have not been able to send out returned Coaches Cards. I now have a shiny new one so expect some cards to come your way soon.

PLAUDITS – CHESTER V MANCHESTER, 9th AUGUST 2009

Plaudits to both teams for a game plated in great spirit - with not a single major penalty, and only one single penalty of greater than five yards. Pleasure to officiate both sets of lads and both coaching staffs.

DISQUALIFICATION CORRECTION

In the previous issue of Newsflash the recent disqualification of Aaron Price was reported twice. This was a mistake and Aaron served his one game suspension on the 9th of August. He is now free to play.

Apologies for any confusion this may have caused.

GAME MANAGEMENT REPORTS

REPORT

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Farnham Knights

Game played at Farnborough RFC. Crew changed in small office/storage room not big enough for 5 officials and were interrupted several times during pregame.

Grass on field was far too long in places. Field marked very poorly on a 90 yard rugby field, with 80 yards marked between the goal lines. There were main lines only every 10 yards. The spaces between these were often more than 10 yards. In many places the hash marks were not 1 yard apart. Between the 30 yard line and midfield on one sideline there were 9 hashes, 10 at the inbounds point closest to that sideline, 11 at the next inbounds point and then 12 on the far sideline!

The chains were used as the official indicator of 10 yards. Many yardage penalties had to be physically marched off in yards, especially half distance penalties.

Chain crew and one ball boy were changed at half time. Despite all of the problems the game was played in generally good spirits..

Dan Bridgland #506

Unknown

Shropshire Revolution

Field had NFL hashmarks, the grass was very long. Plaudits to Plymouth who arrived with just 17 players including only 6 linemen and played hard to the end.

Mike LeFevre #341

16/08/09 v Leicester Falcons

Gloucester Banshees

Coaching box lines marked only 3 feet from sideline on both sides of field. Team area lines were then 9 feet from the sideline. Otherwise, the Banshees' game management was its usual excellent self.

Jim Briggs #31

Unknown

Gateshead Senators

No Team Areas Marked. Goal Post are sited behind the end line, this has been the case since Gateshead started playing on the field over 10 years ago. Chain set dial numbers do not show correctly. Only one ball person available. And on behalf of Tony Newsham - plaudits to Mr Gary Marshall for the excellent burgers he cooked and served between the Youth & Senior games.

Chris Jarvis #10

23/08/09 v East Kilbride Pirates

Outstanding items from previous weeks - None

Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide.
