CONVENTION COUNTDOWN
Programme of Events
The Convention Programme is taking shape and should be completed within the next couple of weeks. We have included a total of 10 different Break-out sessions, covering a variety of topics, which everyone will be able to attend. There will also be plenty of game film to review and a presentation on rule changes. I'm also still on the hunt for a good picture for the Caption Competition, any offers?
56 and counting
We still have 4 weeks to go and already 56 people have registered to attend the Convention. It looks like we could break last year’s attendance of 75. My thanks to everyone for signing up well in advance as it helps considerably with the final arrangements.
No Room at the Inn?
38 people have booked accommodation for the Friday night and 45 for the Saturday. As such, we don’t have many rooms left at the discounted rates. So if you want to take advantage of the fantastic rates on offer you will need to contact Charlie by Friday 5th March at the latest. We cannot guarantee the discounted rates after that date.

The following 56 members have booked their places at the Convention. If you are not listed it may be because you have only recently confirmed your place. An updated list will be issued next week.

ROSTERS AND DISQUALIFICATIONS
We have had a couple of cases recently where officials have disqualified players who subsequently were unable to be identified from their team's roster forms.
Remember that not only is it necessary for the Referee to obtain a roster form from both teams before every game, but he must ensure that the roster identifies the players' jersey numbers. If a player is subsequently disqualified and his number does not appear on the roster, then the player is liable for a two-game suspension once identified.
Repeated cases may result in disciplinary action being taken against a team's head coach. Please note any problems on an incident report.

ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments updated for the 28th Feb are on the website. The latest weather issues mean that the league have yet to confirm the fixtures beyond March 7th. As soon as these are sorted I will advise assignments. Please maintain your availability in the meantime.
Note I am away in Italy this week on business. I will have some access to email but there may be some delays in responses.

After officials had intervened to break up a scuffle between players on the field Oxford's #13 verbally abused the Umpire with foul and abusive language. When the coaches of Oxford were informed of the exact wording, they raised no objection to the disqualification. |

Canterbury Chargers |
Game played at Stodmarsh Sports Fields, Sturry - an unmarked rugby field that was very muddy. The two side lines and goal lines were marked with plastic disc cones. The only visible lines of any nature were the two end lines and the ten metre (rugby) lines. We informed the coaches that we would have no measurements and that a ball carrier would have to be very obviously beyond the goal line for a score. The ball was spotted at points between the goal posts as no inbounds lines. Only provided 2 game balls and one ball boy were provided. Dan Bridgland #506 |
07/03/10 v Anglia Ruskin Phantoms |

Newcastle Raiders |
Game was played at Gateshead International stadium with no team areas or goals behind end line. Tvzi Lindeman #381 |

Kent Falcon |
Upon talking to the medics supplied for the game it was clear that the minimum medical requirements were not met - a fully kitted response car was present, but no registered paramedic or doctor had been supplied and the car was not capable of transporting a patient to hospital.
The medics advised the officials that a doctor would be sent to the ground, but that they would not arrive before 14:00 (kickoff was meant to be 13:00).
Dr Jeremy Parker (BAFRA official) offered to provide support and guidance to the medics present, the medics and head coaches of both teams agreed to this, allowing the game to begin before the en route doctor arrived. The doctor arrived at the ground shortly before the end of the 2nd quarter.
The home team only provided 2 game balls, the 3rd was supplied by Solent. The home team only supplied 1 ball person and the full chain crew about 10 minutes before the game was due to have originally kicked off. Phil Clarke #261 |
07/03/10 v Surrey Stingers |
|
Southampton Stags |
Goals are approximately 2 yards behind the end line and tied to a fence. Front stake of the chains kept coming apart and had to be held together by the chain crew. The chain crew and ball boys were made up of coaching staff and stats people who were also trying to complete other tasks. Officials had been led to understand that kick off was at 13.00 the teams thought that kick off was at 14.00 – we compromised on a 13.30 kick off. Dave Knight #135 |

Outstanding items from previous weeks |

|
Oxford Cavaliers |
50% of all lines on the field were extremely faint. 80 yard field, no hashmarks in bounds or at sidelines. Team areas marked with cones (no lines). Goals leaned over at an angle. Cones used for line markers and hashmarks at the perimeter. Changing room small, cluttered and dirty. Brian Yates #29 |
28/02/10 v Bristol Barracuda |
|
Warwick Wolves |
Warwick only supplied 1 ball person and 2 chain crew. BNU supplied the other member of the chain crew. Graham Coleman #177 |
28/02/10 v Birmingham Lions |
|
Loughborough Aces |
Only one set of posts. Restricted team areas and limit lines, due to field being enclosed by fence. 90 yd pitch Cam Gibson #286 |
28/02/10 v Leicester Longhorns |
|
Bangor Muddogs |
Due to their regular pitch being waterlogged, Bangor had to play on a artificial pitch at another part of the University. The pitch was hastily marked out and had wonky lines, no 5 yd lines and two sidelines did not extend to the endzone at one end. The endzones were 7 yds in length, there were no posts so no field goal kicks were permitted. There were hash marks on the sideline and in inbounds but no 9 yd markings. Despite having received an invoice prior to the game, the officials were not paid as the AU President had disappeared before the game ended.
Bangor have stated that they hope to move to their grass pitch once the weather allows them to. In the meantime, they will address their current pitch issues brought to their attention by the crew. C Unwin #570 |
28/02/10 v Tarannau Aberystwyth |
|
Swansea Titans |
Game played on a soccer pitch with soccer goals and soccer markings. As there were no uprights no kicks were made after touchdowns or field goals. No numbers, nine yard lines, NFL hash marks and the team areas were inadequately marked. Due to the late arrival of the visiting team, the game started 30 mins late to allow players to warm up. Played 15min first and second quarters. 12min third and fourth quarters. Special praise for the cheerleader chain crew. Ray Grace #272 |
28/02/10 v Plymouth Blitz |
|
Worcester Royals |
80 Yard Pitch. Only 1 ball person provided, and that wasn't until after half time. Graham Coleman #177 |
28/02/10 v Reading Knights |
|
Solent Redhawks |
The game was played at Southampton Rugby Club and the changing room provided was small. There was not enough room to hold a pregame and so we moved to the Rugby Club bar and held it there. The field was 80 yards long and was marked every ten yards. There were no clearly marked team area. The ambulance was 55 minutes late. The game did not begin until then and was played with 12 minute quarters. Keith Wickham #423 |
28/01/10 v Essex Blades |
|
