CONVENTION COUNTDOWN
We Keep Growing
Once again the support for this year's Convention has been fantastic. We now have 68 people registered to attend and we are well on our way to exceeding last year’s numbers. Thanks to everyone for registering well in advance. I'm sure there are a few more people out there who have still to confirm whether or not they can come along.
Payment for Hotel Accommodation
Charles Dean-Young has asked that I pass on the following message: A number of people (you know who you are) have still to pay for their accommodation at the Hotel. Please send your cheque, made payable to BAFRA LTD, to Charles Dean-Young, 89 Smithfield Road, Uttoxeter, ST14 7LD by Saturday 6th March to retain your pre-booked room, or contact Charlie direct at finance@bafra.org
Convention Packs
A lot of work goes into making up the packs and getting them to the Hotel on time. As such I have now set a closing date of Monday 8th March for registering to attend the Convention. You can still come along if you decide late in the day however I will only have packs and DVDs for those who pre-register.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
This is a reminder that the papers for the AGM, which is due to be held at 5:00pm on 20th March 2010 at the Coventry Hill Hotel, may be found in the member’s area of the website. Colin Willox has set up a special area where all of the papers are located except for the minutes of the 2009 meeting which may be found in the “meetings” area of the website.
In particular, I draw you attention to the statements of the candidates for election to the posts of President and Director without Portfolio and urge you to read these as part of your decision-making process. For those qualified members unable to attend in person, a proxy voting form may be downloaded from the site but it must be sent in hard copy to the returning officer by 13th March (all details are on the form).
Copies of papers will not be available at the meeting so if you require them in hard copy you should download your own.
Finally, may I remind you that whilst members in all categories may attend and ask questions at the meeting, only qualified members may vote.

BAFA TRAINING COURSES FOR NEW (AND OLD!) OFFICIALS
Many of you will already have seen the posting on various websites announcing four training courses for officials that will be held in March. These are being supported by BAFA using resources provided by Sport England. The shortfall in suitably qualified officials has been identified as one of the key priorities within BAFA, and with planned tightening of regulation regarding who can officiate in games, teams are encouraged to support in the identification of people who could attend these courses.
We are hoping that while the courses will attract completely new people who are not currently participating in the sport, they will also attract current coaches and players. Ideally, those who play/coach during the summer will officiate during the winter, and vice versa. Even if they don't want to commit to that, attending the courses will likely make them better players and coaches through better appreciation both of the rules and how officials apply them.
Unless you have joined BAFRA quite recently, the ones aimed at new officials for contact football will not be of interest to you. However, the flag officiating course to be held near Coventry on 27th March is for anyone who has never officiating flag football before, so will be attractive to many existing BAFRA members. Please sign up for it if you can and help contribute to the development of what may in a few years' time be the more popular discipline of American football. The course is free of charge.
More information on all the courses can be found at http://www.bafra.org/book.htm

Oxford Cavaliers |
Officials changing rooms inadequate..the usual rugby bags strewn around giving a floor space of 3ft x 7ft. No hash marks, kickoff delayed 58mins waiting for ambulance, ball persons had to swap sides as Bristol complained that ball person was listening to their calls and informing the Oxford defence. Note that this was likely the last ever Cavaliers game. Graham Coleman #177 |

Exeter Demons |
Game played at UWE to avoid Exeter conceding, with UWE agreeing to pay BAFRA, which did not happen. No hash-marks on either sideline but inbounds hash-marks were well-marked. No team areas marked. Goalpost at 1end only due to railway line at other end. Game balls supplied needed to be re-inflated. There were 3 changes to gameday assistants due to unreliability / incompetence. Simon Ryan #408 |

Worcester Royals |
Game played on an 80 Yard pitch with no hashmarks on sidelines. Chains were inadequate, down box marker not the required height. Chain crew not provided until just before kickoff time. No ball boys first half and just one provided in the second half. Game delayed 15 minutes due to late arrival of ambulance, played 12 minute quarters. Mike LeFevre #341 |

Sheffield Sabres & Sheffield Hallam |
Officials couldn't access the changing rooms until 45 minutes before kick off as they were being used by soccer officials from a previous game. Then we had to find £10 as a deposit for the key (provided by the Sabres treasurer!) There were no goal posts. The only clear lines we had were the sidelines (tape) goal lines (tape) and the end lines (soccer pitch markings). The only reference points for any other lines were 6" pieces of white tape stuck to the 3G surface at what would have been the intersection of the 10 yd lines and the hashmarks! It was an 80 yard field. It was a challenge, but a good time was had by all! Tim Vickers #129 |

Upon talking to the medics supplied for the game it was clear that the minimum medical requirements were not met - a fully kitted response car was present, but no registered paramedic or doctor had been supplied and the car was not capable of transporting a patient to hospital.
The medics advised the officials that a doctor would be sent to the ground, but that they would not arrive before 14:00 (kickoff was meant to be 13:00).
Dr Jeremy Parker (BAFRA official) offered to provide support and guidance to the medics present, the medics and head coaches of both teams agreed to this, allowing the game to begin before the en route doctor arrived. The doctor arrived at the ground shortly before the end of the 2nd quarter.
The home team only provided 2 game balls, the 3rd was supplied by Solent. The home team only supplied 1 ball person and the full chain crew about 10 minutes before the game was due to have originally kicked off. Phil Clarke #261 |
07/03/10 v Surrey Stingers |
|
Canterbury Chargers |
Game played at Stodmarsh Sports Fields, Sturry - an unmarked rugby field that was very muddy. The two side lines and goal lines were marked with plastic disc cones. The only visible lines of any nature were the two end lines and the ten metre (rugby) lines. We informed the coaches that we would have no measurements and that a ball carrier would have to be very obviously beyond the goal line for a score. The ball was spotted at points between the goal posts as no inbounds lines. Only provided 2 game balls and one ball boy were provided. Dan Bridgland #506 |

Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide. |
