I need a few volunteers to help out during both days of the Convention to make sure everything runs smoothly. This will involve moving everyone around between Break-Out Sessions, staffing the Sign-In Desk and also keeping the programme on schedule. Drop me an email if you can help.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
This is a reminder that the papers for the AGM, which is due to be held at 5:00pm on 20th March 2010 at the Coventry Hill Hotel, may be found in the member’s area of the website. Colin Willox has set up a special area where all of the papers are located except for the minutes of the 2009 meeting which may be found in the “meetings” area of the website.
In particular, I draw you attention to the statements of the candidates for election to the posts of President and Director without Portfolio and urge you to read these as part of your decision-making process. For those qualified members unable to attend in person, a proxy voting form may be downloaded from the site but it must be sent in hard copy to the returning officer by 13th March (all details are on the form).
Copies of papers will not be available at the meeting so if you require them in hard copy you should download your own.
Finally, may I remind you that whilst members in all categories may attend and ask questions at the meeting, only qualified members may vote.

TRAINING COURSES FOR NEW OFFICIALS
The number of applicants for the forthcoming BAFA officiating courses continues to grow, however there is still plenty of space remaining.
Each contact football course is aimed at NEW officials and will provide all the necessary knowledge to be able to safely officiate football. The flag course (for which not many existing BAFRA members have signed up yet - hint, hint!) is for both new and experienced (contact) officials.
The courses will be held on the following dates:
• 13th March (contact football) Newcastle-upon-Tyne
• 27th March (contact football) Hatfield, Herts
• 27th March (contact football) Bristol
• 27th March (flag football) Meriden, Warwickshire
Attendees will receive a Rulebook, Mechanics Manual and an Induction Training Manual.
See http://www.bafra.org/book.htm for more details and the booking form.
A flyer advertising the events is included. If you can, please print it out and pin it up wherever you think a potential American football official might see it. We would appreciate any help any member can give with publicity in local sports or leisure centres.

CORRESPONDENCE FROM PHIL DE MONTE
Oxford Cavaliers coach Phil De Monte has sent the following message to BAFRA:
“I have noticed the write-ups in the weekly Newsflash's regarding the Cavaliers field. Our normal field at Harcourt Hill was taken away 4 weeks before the start of the season, and the one we should of been using was taken away 2 weeks before the start of the season, so you could imagine we were just happy to be playing in Oxfordshire.
I would like to express my thanks to the officials for their patience this season, as it was a very difficult season for us. Field issues aside, it was our last ever season as a combined team, and there were issues off the field that did not help the club.
Anyway, in BAFRA Newsflash 6/10 it was noted that the game on the 28th of Feb was the last ever Oxford Cavaliers game. Needless to say it was a very emotional day, and I think the crew picked up on that. As always, but in some ways more so, the professionalism of the crew while we had issues with the ambulance they did not put any added pressure on us. I would like to thank them for that.
I have spent 13 seasons with the Cavs, 11 as the Head Coach, which equates to 99 games. I would like to say thank you guys 99 times, as without the professionalism of the BAFRA officials the sport would not be as enjoyable as it is today.
While there will be one, maybe two new Uni teams in Oxford next year, I as always look forward to working with the BAFRA crews for many years to come.
With utmost respect,
Phil De Monte”

AVAILABILITY AND ASSIGNMENTS
A new availability form is in place on the website. If you could please login and update availability for the summer I would be most grateful. The latest assignments are also on the website. I will update the playoff assignments for round 2 after the weekend’s games conclude.
There are no crews assigned over the convention weekend.

Lancaster Bombers |
Game played on 80 yard field, no goal posts, limited hash marks, no 5 yard lines, team areas not marked, ball boy changed at half time, balls only provided 5 minutes before assigned kick-off time and required inflating. Game started 10 minutes late as teams decided late to undertake the card check even though it was made clear to the officials that one would not be conducted. However, the chain crew was one of the best that we have seen all season! Mark Snow #430 |

Imperial Immortals |
Game played on an unmarked rugby field using one main sideline and a "coned" off 10 metre line as the other sideline. No discernible goal line at either end so had to make do with pylons only. Both teams played the game in a good spirit despite all the inconveniences. Lee Mills #70 |

Kent Falcons |
Kent only had two game balls. Surrey kindly supplied the third. The game itself was played in a good spirit, it was a pleasure to officiate these teams. Steve Tonkinson #99 |

|
York Centurions |
In the second quarter the game was suspended for approximately 10 minutes to facilitate the removal of a spectator from the York University playing fields who was hurling foul, obscene and racist remarks at some players Massive thanks and plaudits to the the York game management for their unquestioning response to our request and extremely efficient cooperation in doing this! Canterbury Chargers |
Game was played at Chaucer Technology School in Canterbury. Field was a shortened Rugby field with white markings. Football markings were in pale pink. 80-yard filed with yard lines every 10 yards. No hashmarks at either the sideline or at the inbounds spots, no 9-yard marks and no team areas. Rugby goalposts would have been inbounds so had to be removed, the post holes covered with sand and earth and the game played without goals. Field surface was muddy and uneven in places but playable. Game balls provided were all worn and only one was at legal pressure. Chain crew and ball boys were only provided at scheduled kickoff time and game had to be suspended at the end of the first quarter whilst the original chain crew was replaced and their replacements trained. Sheffield Hallam Warriors |
Officials couldn't access the changing rooms until 45 minutes before kick off as they were being used by soccer officials from a previous game. Then we had to find £10 as a deposit for the key (provided by the Sabres treasurer!) There were no goal posts. The only clear lines we had were the sidelines (tape) goal lines (tape) and the end lines (soccer pitch markings). The only reference points for any other lines were 6" pieces of white tape stuck to the 3G surface at what would have been the intersection of the 10 yd lines and the hashmarks! It was an 80 yard field. It was a challenge, but a good time was had by all! Tim Vickers #129 |
