BAFACL WEBSITE
For those who are not already aware, the BAFA Community League Organising Committee has now launched a new website and forum. Full details can be found on the BAFA website at www.bafa.org.uk or you can go direct to the site at www.bafacl.com.
As the BAFL website and forum are now offline I expect this one will become fairly busy.

NEW OFFICIATING COURSE IN EDINBURGH
Following successful training courses held in Newcastle, Bristol, Hatfield and Coventry, BAFA and BAFRA are organising a further American football Official training course. As before, this course is aimed at the beginner official. The goal of the course is to train attendees to a level where they are competent to officiate American Football. The date and location are given on the BAFRA website. The course will consist of a one day face-to-face learning.
Teams are encouraged to send any potential officials they may have to these courses. Attendees will receive a Rulebook, Mechanics Manual and an Induction Training Manual. Upon successful completion of the course, an attendee will become an associate official, and registered with BAFRA, the BAFA officiating body.

2010 EXAMINATION
All qualified and associate members should by now have received their 2010 exam. I have had a couple of members who have let me know they have not received it and I have sent replacements. If you have not received it, you need to contact me as a matter of urgency. Please note that those who have joined since 20th March 2010 have not been sent an examination paper. However, if any of our most recent recruits wish to attempt the exam, they should contact me by e-mail and I will post them a copy.
To date (Wednesday 14th April) I have received answer sheets from Ashley Allen, Graham Baker, Lee Baker, Ian Ball, Bernard Bradley, Dan Bridgland, Colin Bright, Amir Brooks, Alisha Cockerill, Martin Cockerill, Graham Coleman, Phil Cottier, Charles Dean-Young, Tim Fisher, Cameron Gibson, Murray Gibson, Graham Hedges, Pete Johnson, David Knight, Mike LeFevre, Lee Mills, Tim Ockendon, Larry Rigby, Nobby Scott, Mark Wilson, Lee Wood and Brian Yates. I will keep this list updated on a weekly basis throughout the exam period. I remind people that a field diagram is available on the website for those who require it.
We have had a query about the exam. As always, there is no intent to deceive in the exam. For absolute clarity, therefore, unless it states otherwise in the question, the snapper is always the middle lineman of the offence.
The examination must be returned to me by Saturday 24th April at the latest, unless an extension has been granted. As it says on the preamble to the exam, extensions may only be granted by the Director of Training; the Examination Committee do not have this authority. As the Directors are still debating the best option regarding the appointment of the Director of Training, applications for extension should be sent to Davie Parsons until otherwise notified. Davie may be contacted via either president@bafra.org or training@bafra.org. Results will be sent out individually after the exam period closes.

CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU CHECKS
Following the request in the last Newsflash, I am pleased to inform people that Martin Cockerill, in his role as Director without Portfolio #1 has volunteered to take on the role of coordination of the CRB checks on behalf of BAFA. Once he has had discussions with the relevant people within BAFA and the firm acting on BAFA’s behalf, he will be posting further details in Newsflash.

ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE 18TH APRIL
As there are only 3 games I have advised the crews for these games individually of their assignments. If you have not heard from me you are currently not assigned a game this weekend.

BAFA CL REGULAR SEASON ASSIGNMENTS
Although the inaugural game takes place this weekend (18th) the season starts in earnest on the 25th April. I am just waiting on confirmation of the games that weekend but should be able to issue assignments no later than Sunday 18th, potentially earlier.
The May schedules are still open to change but I am hoping to be able to issue the assignments for the whole of May by the 25th April. I do need to ask for your patience as the new league coordinators get to grips with the scheduling issues. This may result in fixture changes as the season progresses.
I must reiterate that the schedule is quite geographically diverse and will result in more travel that we saw in the BUAFL season. Again I ask for your cooperation in ensuring we can put out all the crews we need.

INVERNESS & CORNWALL - URGENT
I have to cover games in Inverness and Cornwall on the following dates
2nd May Highland Wildcats & Cornish Sharks
16th May Cornish Sharks
6th June Highland Wildcats
13th June Cornish Sharks
4th July Cornish Sharks
1st August Cornish Sharks
8th August Highland Wildcats
15th August Highland Wildcats.
I have had a few responses on this and thank you to those that have volunteered. I have an urgent need to cover the 2 weekends in May requiring crews in Inverness and Cornwall. Can anyone possibly do these dates?

GOODIES FROM AMERICA
I am currently going through my induction training with Andrew Lovell in the West Midlands, and he suggested I drop you all a note to see if I can help!
I will be in the USA (Michigan and Minnesota) at the end of April for a martial arts event, and while there I will be picking up the majority of my refereeing gear from a local shop that my friend (in Detroit) has found for me. I am only there for 6 days and will have a decent amount of space available in my case - so if anyone wants any goodies picking up that are a) unavailable, or b) too expensive from this side of the pond, please drop me a line with your wants list and some contact details.
I can be emailed at s [dot] halls [at] btinternet [dot] com. Please excuse the anti spam measure, but if you struggle with this, my details can be found on the membership list page of the BAFRA site!

No numbers or 9 yard marks. No sideline markers to indicate yard lines. Home team only had a down box - fortunately one of the officials had a chain set in the boot of his car! Chain crew changed at half-time. Game kicked off 5 minutes late due to late arrival of ambulance. However, offsetting the above, we had an officials changing room with leather armchairs and a private bar! Jim Briggs #31 |
