SELECTION COMMITTEE VACANCIES

We recently advertised for applications for membership of the selection committee. We have received no applications and have therefore extended the deadline for applications to 5pm Friday July 16th.

Therefore we are again seeking applications from members who would like to join the committee in one of the two vacancies. Applicants should be prepared to attend up to two full day meetings per year and occasional ad hoc telephone conferences. The committee terms of reference can be found in the member handbook. Written applications should be emailed to the Director of Operations with a brief statement outlining why you would like to serve and what you think you can bring to the committee. A brief officiating CV would also be appreciated.

Closing date for applications is now 5pm July 16th. After which the board will consider all applications and advise the members of the new appointees.

FIELD AUDITS

There have been a number of games recently where the field audit has not been submitted alongside the rest of the game day paperwork. I remind people that this information goes towards awards given to teams at the end of the season. One team has been unlucky enough to miss its last three audits! If you have ones that were completed but you forgot to include them in the envelope, please ensure they are submitted with your next game.

Also, for double headers, there should be an audit for each game. However, if they are at the same venue and identical, there is no need to fill in two separate sheets, but please note on the sheet that it applies to both games.

COLCHESTER GLADIATORS

Please note the following from Colchester.

Following a number of problems that the Gladiators have had with their home venue, we've now had to switch to an alternative. So for the remainder of 2010 both the Gladiators youth and senior teams will be playing home matches at:

Harwich & Parkeston Football Club

The Royal Oak Ground

Main Road

Harwich

Essex

CO12 4AA

Our home venue map has been updated.”

BAFRA WEBSITE

You may be aware that we have changed hosting service provider for our website. The change has taken a month to complete and has been undertaken by our webmaster Colin Willox. On behalf of the board I would like to thank Colin for his efforts in making the transition to the new provider very smooth and for managing the transition for us with very few issues at all.

YORKSHIRE RAMS

Please see the note below from the Yorkshire Rams.

Believe it or not, the Rams have been asked to take part in a music video - we are told this is likely to air on the likes of MTV and could be a hit; the creator has other UK chart hits. The filming is to take place on the 24th July 2010 at the Rams Ground (TBC).

Would any referees be willing to attend to add to the atmosphere as we are trying to recreate a game? They are supplying the cheerleaders. I can give further details but thought I would just see if anyone is interested first.

Manager - Yorkshire Rams”

If anyone would be interested in this please contact me and I will advise the Rams of the level of interest. There is no payment for this event.

CORNWALL 4TH JULY

Many thanks to everyone who has responded to my plea for a ref this Saturday at Cornish Sharks. You may be interested to know that the game has been cancelled as the Sharks have mumps in their squad. My best wishes to them for a speedy recovery.

GAME MANAGEMENT REPORTS

HOME TEAM

REPORT

NEXT HOME GAME

New this week

Bristol Aztecs

One team area marked (at one end) to the 30-yard line. Otherwise the field markings are perfect. Chain crew and ball boy poor, even making allowances for the heat.

Jim Briggs #31

08/08/10 v London Blitz

Gateshead Senators

This report applies to the youth game played as first of double header. Game played on a multi-use pre-marked astroturf pitch with white soccer markings. No 9 yard marks, team area indicated by 5 a side markings. 90 yard pitch with 8 yard endzones. Goal posts 12 yards from goal line, one set not parallel to end line. In the senior game only one ball boy was provided

Tzvi Lindeman #381

08/08/10 v Doncaster Mustangs

Staffordshire Surge

Coaches box missing , team box missing , no nine yard marks, no numbers. Change to chain crew for second half.

Martin Cockerill #345

25/07/10 v Manchester Titans

Merseyside Nighthawks

Two ball boys were provided, but the second ball boy was also in charge of the down box, which caused some problems regarding down box movement.

Mike Cavanagh #465

08/08/10 v Yorkshire Rams

Outstanding items from previous weeks

Norwich Devils

On arrival at the venue for the scheduled 1200 kick-off, the crew were informed that kick-off was not in fact until 1430. The home team had also made no provision for payment of officials or BAFRA owning to an issue with their bank account.

Tim Fisher #439

Essex Spartans 04/07/10

Sussex Thunder

Excellent facilities at Broadbridge Heath stadium, except for goal posts which were only about 14ft tall. Water and fruit provided in officials changing room much appreciated. Officials for future games should note to park in the Bowls Club car park; you may be clamped if you park in Tescos.

Jim Briggs #31

04/07/10 v London Blitz

Sheffield Tomahawks

Although the field markings appear perfect the field is measured out, at least lengthways, in metres. Both coaches were notified about this as obviously we had to use the chains, meaning that it was possible for it to appear that a drive started on a yard line would gain a first down after an apparent nine and a half yards! Plaudits to Tomahawks management who paid us in exactly the right notes and coins!

Tim Vickers #129

11/07/10 v Nottingham Caesars

South Wales Warriors

Changing Rooms Inadequate.

Ray Grace #272

11/07/10 v Oxford Saints

East Kent Mavericks

Played at Folkestone RFC. No team area line or limit lines. No numbers or 9-yard marks. Hashmarks faded as the game progressed and with no hashmarks at the sidelines. Officials assistants changed on multiple occasions throughout the match.

Tim Ockendon #481

11/07/10 v Colchester Gladiators

Birmingham Bulls

Kick off was delayed by half-hour while chain set was brought from Birmingham University who had borrowed them.

Brian Yates #29

11/07/10 v Tamworth Phoenix

Coventry Jets

Game kicked off 27 mins late due to late arrival of London Blitz (bus problems). No numbers or 9-yard marks on the side of the field opposite the press box. Coaching box line only 4 feet from sideline and team area only 8 feet from sideline on each side. Very inattentive ball boys.

Jim Briggs #31

03/07/10 v London Cobras

Sheffield Predators

90 Yard Field with field markings a combination of metres and yards. (eg. last 10 yards to end zone 10 yards, and 40 to 40 were 10 metres). Apart from that, the field was very well marked out. Predators charged a time out in first quarter because ball boy promised had not been allocated, then rushed to get one for the Lancashire sideline. Ball boy on Predators sideline was changed at half time.

Mark Snow #430

04/07/10 v Shropshire Revolution

Note: it is possible that any game may be cancelled, or any team may arrange additional games. Any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide.

END ZONE

PLAY OF THE WEEK:

New this week

Play: A's ball, 3rd and 4, on B's 8. Ten seconds remain in the fourth quarter. The score is A20-B21. A7's field goal attempt is blocked and simultaneously recovered by A63 and B75 on B's 12. Four seconds remain on the clock. Next play and clock?
Ruling?

Previous week's play

Play: A's ball, try, on B's 3. A6's kick is partially blocked. B65 recovers the ball on B's 2 and, without momentum, runs the ball into his own end zone. As B65 is being tackled in his end zone, he throws the ball to the ground just in front of him (illegal forward pass). Result of play? Next play?
Ruling? A's ball, free kick, on A's 35. Safety. Team A scores one point. Following Team B possession on a try, distance penalties against either team are declined by rule. However, since B65 was responsible for the ball being in B's end zone, it becomes a safety (7-3-7-c, 8-3-4-a). The impetus for the ball being in B's end zone is B65's run. The result of the play is a safety.
