Following the sad
passing of Bernard earlier this month, the Directors have taken the decision to
retire number #316, as an act of respect and remembrance. He is only the
second person in the existence of BAFRA to have his number retired.
Richard Prattley, a good friend of Bernard’s as well as an on-field colleague,
has written the memorial notice. It is on our website in the member’s
handbook at the following link: http://www.bafra.org/info/handbook/honorary.htm

Davie Parsons is currently absent. He may be reachable by email during that time, but if there is anything urgent to deal with, please ensure that it's brought to the attention of Steve Tonkinson (Deputy President) or another director.
Davie ParsonsDavie is absent because he, along with Keith Wickham and Pete Parsons, are currently representing BAFRA and Great Britain at the EFAF European Championships. Pete (Line Judge) and Keith (Side Judge) officiated the opening game between Austria and Germany and Davie (Umpire) and Pete (Field Judge) then officiated Finland v Austria a few days later. The tournament continues…
Alan DobsonThe August assignments are now available in the members’ area of the BAFRA website.
Please note that if you are unassigned for any week, make alternative arrangements and become unavailable, you should inform me immediately. I shall need my reserves this month.

| Jaiah Benson-Turay | 30 | London Blitz (Youth) | FGT | 4 | In apparent frustration, the player aimed a punch at an opponent's head. | 01/08/10 vs Hampshire Thrashers (Youth) |
| Thomas Proctor | 49 | Bristol Aztecs | TUF | 4 | After being flagged for baiting the quarterback before the ball was snapped early in the fourth quarter, the same player taunted the Farnham sideline after a late hit out of bounds. | 08/08/10 vs London Blitz |
Note: it is the responsibility of the individual teams to ensure that their suspended players serve their suspensions in the proper game (according to the BAFA Disciplinary Code), and any dates mentioned here are intended only as a guide. |

New this week |

| Staffordshire Surge | No team boxes / coaches box, limit lines on either sideline. Chain
crew - down box operator doubled as ballboy - only one ballboy provided

Outstanding items from previous weeks |
||
| East Kent Mavericks | Coaching box
and team area too close to sideline. No hashes at side lines. No numbers or
nine yard marks. Inbounds lines faint and disappeared after the youth game.
Ball persons inattentive and poor. Officials assistants changed during senior game without informing officials (at one
point an assistant was trying to be the down box operator, ball boy and eat a
KFC!) The owner of a nearby house lit a bonfire which blew smoke over the
field. The council were called, and the householder put the fire out. At
Folkestone RFC, you have to cross a road to get from the changing rooms (in
the clubhouse) to the field.

01/08/10 vs Kent Exiles |
| Birmingham Bulls | Chain crew provided by Tamworth so many thanks to Andy Mortimer, Jim Mortimer, Tom Bishop, John Winter and Andy Garrett for stepping into the void and doing an excellent job. Greatly appreciated Martin Cockerill #345 |
01/08/10 v Nottingham Caesars |
| Oxford Saints | Poor field quality. Grass very long. Murray Gibson #268 |
08/08/10 v Tamworth Phoenix |
| Farnham Knights (Youth) | Kickoff delayed 1 hour 10 minutes. No ambulance was present at the scheduled time, but one
was procured after a considerable delay. During the 3rd quarter, one of the
Blitz assistant coaches was observed along the sideline outside the team
area. After being first requested to return and then warned, he was penalised
for being out of the team area. He continued to refuse to return to the team area, saying that he had
"quit" his coaching role. After consultation with game management
and the Blitz head coach, and to avoid a scene, the individual was allowed to
remain on the Blitz sideline (though outside the team area) until the end of
the game. At the end of the game an unidentified member of the Blitz sideline
staff entered the field and remonstrated with the departing officials in a
way that was clearly audible to the spectators present. Before the game, Blitz had alleged that Farnham #27 Christopher Neate was overage. Farnham were able to produce a copy of the player's BAFA registration form showing the player's date of birth as February 1991 and he was allowed to play. Jim Briggs #31 |
08/08/10 v Bristol Aztecs (Youth) |
| East Kilbride Pirates | With the score at 51-0 in favour of the home team and with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter, the Nighthawks Head Coach informed the Referee that due to a falling number of fit players at his disposal, he did not want to continue playing on the grounds of player safety. Home team head Coach and game management were made aware of the situation and accepted it. The game was abandoned at that point. Henry Richardson #25 | 08/08/10 v Dundee Hurricanes |
| Chester Romans | With 3.30 remaining in Quarter 3, game was suspended for 32 minutes for paramedic and ambulance assistance to Chester Head coach who collapsed on the sidelines. County ambulance conveyed Coach to hospital, allowing game to proceed following discussions with both teams and their coaching staffs. Mike Cavanagh #465 |
08/08/10 vs Hull Hornets |
| Merseyside Nighthawks | Two ball boys were provided, but the second ball boy was also in charge of the down box, which caused some problems regarding down box movement. Mike Cavanagh #465 |
08/08/10 vs Yorkshire Rams |
| Bristol Aztecs | One team area marked (at one end) to the 30-yard line. Otherwise the field markings are perfect. Chain crew and ball-boy poor, even making allowances for the heat. Jim Briggs #31 |
08/08/10 vs London Blitz |
| Gateshead Senators | This report applies to the youth game played as first of double header. Game played on a multi-use pre-marked astroturf pitch with white soccer markings. No 9-yard marks, team areas indicated by 5-a-side markings. 90 yard pitch with 8 yard endzones. Goal posts 12 yards from goal line, one set not parallel to end line. In the senior game only one ball-boy was provided Tzvi Lindeman #381 |
08/08/10 vs Doncaster Mustangs |
| Sussex Thunder | Goal crossbar almost certainly more than 10 feet above ground level and uprights only extend a few feet above it. Goals are located about 2 yards beyond the end line. Otherwise excellent facilities with fruit and water in the officials' changing room. Jim Briggs #31 |
15/08/10 vs London Cobras |
Last week: 2nd and 8 on B's 30. B28 intercepts A17's legal forward pass on B's 2, and his original momentum carries him into B's end zone, where he fumbles. The ball bounces into the field of play to B's 3, where A64 bats the ball forward into B’s end zone and out of bounds.
Ruling: A64’s act is illegal batting (9-4-1-c) and the penalty is 15 yards from the basic spot. The foul occurred during a running play (2-30-4) with a run that ended in the end zone after a change of team possession (10-2-2-d-2). Because the momentum exception (8-5-1 Exception) applies to B28’s interception, the basic spot is B’s 2, not the goal line; and the Three-and-One Principle (10-2-2-c) says that a foul by a team not in possession is always enforced from the basic spot regardless of whether the foul was beyond or behind it.
Next play: Team B’s ball, 1st and 10 on B’s 17.
