BAFRA Newsflash

Issue: 37/14

18th September 2014

Membership renewals are due from 1st October for the coming year. All members will be receiving their renewal letters electronically over the next few days. All instructions will be on the letter but, please contact me if anything is unclear. As always, if people anticipate any difficulty in paying their renewal fee, they should contact the Director of Finance, Andrew Lovell (, in complete confidence to agree a payment plan. This should be done sooner rather than later, but in all cases by the date given on the letter. To ensure that you receive your letter, please make sure that your e-mail address is up to date on the website. If you have not received a renewal letter by the 25th September, please contact me as a matter of urgency.

As always, there will be an annual survey of members accompanying the renewal form. In previous years, this has provided information that has influenced various developments and changes within BAFRA. Please return the survey along with your renewal form.

The Directors have been discussing how BAFRA may more effectively cover flag and 5-on-5 football tournaments. As a part of this process, the Director of Operations, Richard Vernon, is seeking your views on what influences (or may influence) your willingness to cover such games. A short survey will accompany the renewal form to Qualified and Associate members. This should be returned to me along with your renewal form.

New this week

Play: On a try attempt at Team B's 3 yard line, Team B is flagged for lining up in the neutral zone at the snap. B80 blocks the kick, recovers the ball, and returns it until A18 tackles him at Team A's 45 yard line by grasping and twisting his facemask. Ruling?

Last week

Play: A's ball, try, on B's 3. The score is A28-B28. Time has expired in the fourth quarter. A6's kick is wide right. During the down, A49 flagrantly threw B97 to the ground by grabbing B97's face mask on team B's 7 yard line. Ruling?

Ruling: The penalty is declined by rule, since it was a Team A foul during a try down in which Team A failed to score (8-3-3-c-3). The game will go into an extra period. Even though the penalty was declined, A49 is still ejected (10-1-1-b). The foul does not carry over into the extra period.

New this week

Game Situation: On a 4 man crew on a punt play, the Linejudge often ends up a long way from the end of the kick. How

can the ball boy be instructed before the game to help the Linjudge in this regard?
Answer next issue...

Last week

Play: On a 7 man crew the Sidejudge is covering receiver A88 who is running a post pattern directly towards him. Just as Quarterback A5 releases a pass towards A80 who is running a different route on the other side of the field, defensive back B20 holds A88 and restricts his movement for several seconds. Ruling?
Answer: Though everywhere is considered the point of attack on a pass play before the pass is thrown, as soon as the ball is thrown holding should only be called against defenders who either illegally obstruct an offensive player from making a lead block (MM 3-3-2-f). Once the ball has been thrown to the other side of the field, defensive holding should not be thrown unless it is a clear attempt to restrict a player as above (MM 3-3-2-g). In this case, the Sidejudge should most likely not call B20 for holding, unless the play comes towards his side of the field and B20's restriction prevents A88 from blocking.
