When used

This signal is used by the Referee to indicate that the ball has been illegally batted or kicked.

Penalty

For batting a ball forwards either when in player possession or a backwards pass, this is a 15 yard penalty from the basic spot. For batting or kicking a loose ball it usually also attracts a Loss of Down (
